17 Thou hast heard, O Jehovah, the desire of the

lowly, a

Thou establishest their heart: thou inclinest

thine ear to hear,

18 To judge the fatherless and oppressed one, That man that is of the earth may no more terrify.

PSALM XI.

For the chief Musician. By David.

IN Jehovah do I take refuge :

How say ye to my soul,

"Flee as a bird to your mountain;

"For, lo, the wicked bend the bow,

'They prepare their arrow upon the string,
"To shoot in darkness at the upright in

heart.

3. "When the foundations are destroyed,

4

"What can the righteous one do?"

Jehovah is in his holy temple,

Jehovah's throne is in the heavens:
His eyes behold,

His eyelids try the children of men.

5 Jehovah trieth the righteous one; but the

wicked one,

* Ps. xxii. 26; xxxvii. 11; lxix. 32; lxxvi. 9; cxlvii. 6;

cxlix. 4.

And him that loveth violence, his soul hateth.

6 Upon the wicked will he rain snares; fire, and brimstone,"

And a horrible tempest shall be the portion of

their cup.

7 For Jehovah is righteous; he loveth right

eousness;

His countenance doth behold the upright one.

For the faithful fail from among the children

2 They speak lies, every man with his neighbour:

3

With a flattering lip and with a double heart do they speak.

Jehovah will cut off all flattering lips, And the tongue that speaketh great things,

we prevail;

b Isa. lvii. 1; Micah vii. 2.

"Our lips are our own: who is lord over us?" 5 "On account of the oppression of the afflicted, on account of the sighing of the needy,

6

"Now will I rise up," saith Jehovah :

"I will set him in safety whom man puffeth at."

The words of Jehovah are clean words,*

As silver tried in a furnace of earth,

Purified seven times.

7 Thyself, O Jehovah, wilt keep them;

Thou wilt preserve us from this generation.

for ever.

8 The wicked walk on every side,

When the vilest of the children of men is exalted.

PSALM XIII.

For the chief Musician. A Psalm by David.

HOW long, O Jehovah? wilt thou forget

me for ever?

How long wilt thou hide thy face from me? 2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, Having sorrow in my heart daily?

a Ps. xviii. 30; cxix. 40.

b Dan. xi. 21.

How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? 3 Behold and answer me, O Jehovah, my God: Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of

death,

4 Lest mine enemy say, "I have prevailed against him,"

And mine adversaries rejoice because I am moved.

5 But as for me, I trust in thy loving-kindness; My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation: 6 I shall sing unto Jehovah because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

PSALM XIV.a

For the chief Musician. By David.

1 THE fool saith in his heart, "There is no God."

They are corrupt, they do abominable things.

Jehovah looked down from heaven upon

the children of men,

To see if there were any that did understand,
That did seek God."

a Ps. liii. 13.

b Jer. v. 1; Ezek. xxii. 30.

3 They have all departed: they are all together

become filthy;

There is none that doeth good, no, not one.a

Do none of the workers of iniquity know, Who eat up my people as they eat bread,

And call not upon Jehovah ?

5 There were they greatly afraid;

For God is in the generation of the righteous

one.

6 Ye put to shame the counsel of the afflicted one, Because Jehovah i his refuge.

7

Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!

When Jehovah bringeth back the captivity of

his people,

Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
