4 "I will make mention of Egypt and Babylon*

among those that know me;

Behold, Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia,— "This people hath been born there."

5 So of Zion it shall be said, “Divers sorts of

men have been born in her,

"And the most High himself shall establish her."

6 Jehovah shall count, when he writeth down

the peoples,

"This people hath been born there." "

Singers as well as musicians,

All my springs are in thee.

Selah.

PSALM LXXXVIII.

A Song. A Psalm. For the sons of Korah. For the chief Musician. On the Mahalath for singing. A didactic Poem by Heman the Ezrahite.d

1

O JEHOVAH, God of my salvation,

I cry day and night before thee.

2 Let my prayer come before thee, Incline thine ear unto my cry;

" Isa. xix. 23-25.

b Isa. ii. 1-4; Zech. viii. 22. '
A kind of harp, Ps. liii., title.
d 1 Kings iv. 31; 1 Chron. ii. 6.

[blocks in formation]

I am as a man without strength,
Free among the dead,

As the slain that lie in the grave,

Whom thou rememberest no more,

And as to them, they are cut off from thy hand.

6 Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit,

In darkness, in the depths.

7 Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,

And thou hast afflicted me with all thy

[blocks in formation]

Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction :

I call upon thee, O Jehovah, every day,

I stretch out my hands unto thee.

10 Wilt thou do wonders for the dead?

a Ps. vi. 5 (note).

b Ps. xlii. 7.

Shall the departed rise up and give thee

thanks?

Selah.

Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the

grave?

And thy faithfulness in the place of destruction ?

12 Shall thy wonders be known in the place of darkness?

13

And thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness ?

But as for me, unto thee, O Jehovah, do I

cry;

And in the morning my prayer cometh before

thee.

14 Why, O Jehovah, dost thou cast off my soul? Why dost thou hide thy face from me?

15 I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:

While I suffer thy terrors, I am distracted.

16 Thy wrath goeth over me:

Thy terrors destroy me;

17 They compass me about like water all the day,

They surround me together.

18 Lover and companion hast thou put far from

me,

And mine acquaintance into darkness.

PSALM LXXXIX.

A didactic Poem by Ethan the Ezrahite.

I WILL sing of the loving-kindnesses of
Jehovah for ever:

With

my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations;

2 For I have said, Loving-kindness shall be built up for ever:

In the very heavens wilt thou establish thy faithfulness.

3 "I have made a covenant with my chosen

one,

"I have sworn unto David my servant,

"For ever will I establish thy seed,

"And build up thy throne to all generations.'

" b

Selah.

And the heavens shall praise thy wonders,

O Jehovah,

Even thy faithfulness, in the assembly of the

holy ones;

6 For who in the sky can be compared unto Jehovah ?

1 Kings iv. 31; 1 Chron. ii. 6. b Vers. 29, 36; 1 Chron. xvii. 11-14.

Who among the children of the gods is like

unto Jehovah ?

7 A very dreadful God in the assembly of the holy ones,

And terrible above all that are round about

him.

O Jehovah, God of Hosts,

Who is like unto thee, the strong Jah,

With thy faithfulness round about thee?

9 Thou rulest the raging of the sea;

b

When it lifteth up its billows, it is thou that stillest them.

10 It is thou that hast broken Egypt in pieces, as one that is slain;

Thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is

thine:

As for the world and the fulness thereof, it is

thou that hast founded them.

12 The north and the south, it is thou that hast created them:

Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at thy name.

13 Thou hast a mighty arm;

Strong is thy hand, exalted thy right hand.

a Ps. xxix. 1; Exod. xv. 11; Ps. lxxxvi. 8.

b Rev. iv. 3.
