THE

KUSA JÁ TAKÉ.

A BUDDHISTIČ LEGEND.

BEING AN EASTERN LOVE STORY, rendered for the first time into English Verse from the Sinhalese.

By THOMAS STEELE, Ceylon Civil Service.

This Poem, which is one of the most popular of Buddhistic Legends, is founded on one of the histories in the Pansiyapanas jatakapota, or Book of the Five Hundred and Fifty Births. Buddhists believe that their Great Teacher, before attaining to the Buddhaship, underwent, as they hold do all sentient beings, countless transmigrations, five hundred and fifty of which he revealed to his followers. In one of these he was born as Kusa, Emperor of Jambudwipa (India), and his adventures while in that life form the subject of the Legendary Poem, a rendering of which into English Verse, from the pen of Mr. Thomas Steele, of the Ceylon Civil Service, is now offered to the public. The original is a Sinhalese classic, and is of deservedly high repute in countries where Buddhism prevails. It is without question a remarkably attractive specimen of Sinhalese Literature. As illustrating Buddhistic history, precept, and practice, and modes of life and feeling in the East, little known here, and as a valuable contribution to the stock of Aryan folk-lore, the work will, it is believed, be found of great and general interest. The Legend, which is a Love Story, is more than ordinarily attractive, being natural, lucid, graceful, and graphic in its details. Its perfect freedom from grossness is a matter deserving admiring comment. Some of the passages exhibit great beauty and tenderness of sentiment. The student of Comparative Mythology, and the lover of old-world stories, will be interested in finding ancient Aryan incidents, which appear in the Mahabharata, here worked up into a comparatively modern Buddhistic myth, in a country where an almost exact counter-part of the Judgment of Solomon, but not derived from Hebrew sources, has long been current. The seven kings who are to marry one bride; the hero disguised as a potter, a groom, and a cook; the miraculous births of the hero by the favour of Indra; and many minor incidents of the story, reveal a close connexion between the Legend and the old Sanskrit Epic, and, it may be added, between both and many popular tales of Western Europe.

The translation is in old Ballad Metre, the one best adapted to convey the spirit of the original, and reads stanza for stanza with the latter, which consists of 687 stanzas of four lines each. A body of illustrative and explanatory notes, entering into considerable detail, is appended; and some additional matter of interest, in the shape of a few epigrams and short Buddhistic and other stories from the Sinhalese, will be found at the end of the volume.

The original, it may be noted, is one of the books prescribed by the Board of Examiners in Ceylon for the Civil Service, LONDON: TRÜBNER & CO., 8 AND 60, PATERNOSTER ROW.

Now ready, in 1 vol. 4to., half-bound, pp. vi., 72, and x. Price 10s. 6d.

ANDREA ALCIATO,

And his Book of Emblems. A Bibliographical Study. By HENRY GREEN, M.A. With some Illustrations.

The work will contain a Life of Alciat, and Notices of about 170 editions of his Emblems. To very many of them will be appended a full collation, and such particulars as have been gathered from the editions themselves, or from writers who have mentioned them. Authority will also be adduced for every edition that is named without having been seen by the Editor.

To obtain the fullest possible information, after exhausting the resources of the British Museum, the Bodleian, University of Cambridge Libraries, and such private collections as were accessible, the Editor, in the Spring of 1870, issued a circular to the Librarians of the chief Public Libraries at home and on the Continent; and from many of them he has received returns of the various editions in their charge. He will thus be enabled to point out the libraries in which editions of the work are found.

It is hoped that the Bibliographical Study will show what a fund of information might be obtained respecting emblem books, if a plan of a similar kind were followed out for all of them. In that special kind of literature the Editor has ascertained that there have been printed more than three thousand separate editions, and that they were composed by nearly fourteen hundred authors. Of these the present Manuals of Libraries conta'n but a small portion.

Subscribers' names will be received by the Publishers, Messrs. TRÜBNER & Co., 8 and 60, Paternoster Row, London, E.C. N.B. The work to be paid for on delivery.

N.B.-All the Books named in this and previous Numbers are described from actual examination, and every work is either in the possession or has passed through the hands of MESSRS. TRÜBNER & Co. Librarians and Scholars, therefore, who experience any difficulty in procuring the works, would do well to communicate direct with the Publishers of this RECORD. As may be readily supposed, it would be imprudent to import such works in large quantities; but where all the copies of the works specified are actually sold, they can be replaced, if a reasonable time be allowed.

[blocks in formation]

The Library of the University of Strassburg, linked for ever with the fame of Gutenberg, Herder, and Göthe, perished in the recent war. When the great City which had done so much for letters was bereft of her chief means of teaching, men of books and study felt a natural wish to help her in replacing the collection she had lost. That wish has now become a fact. A hint was first thrown out in Baden that the gifts of Authors, Publishers, Learned Societies, and Universities would be gratefully received by the authorities and people of Elsass. This hint was taken up so warmly in the Universities of Berlin, Vienna, Zürich, and many other Cities, as well as by Authors and Publishers in London, Paris, and New York, that there was soon good hope that these free offerings to the suffering University would supply in some degree her loss.

Under the authority of Baron von Kühlwetter, Civil Governor of Elsass (whose official mandate is subjoined), a Committee has been formed in London to collect and forward such offerings as their literary and scientific brethren may be pleased to make. All books of a suitable sort will be accepted. Authors are invited to present copies of their works, and Publishers selections from their lists. Reports of Learned bodies, reprints of publishing Societies, and duplicates from old Libraries, will be welcome.

(Parcels should be sent and communications addressed to NICHOLAS TRÜBNER, Esq., 60, Paternoster Row.)
