In a long review of the work by an artistic critic (F.C.G.), The Westminster Gazette says: "The difficulty about Mr. Punch is to know where to begin on him. Here are four volumes of his best, and they are nothing less than a pictorial history of the Victorian age, or at least of the social side of it, for the political cartoons are excluded from this issue. It is a long procession of types, partly humorous and putly pathetic. Page alter page, memories for the old, history for the young, but all of it revealing the curious, subtle changes which have brought the English character to its present point from the days of our grandparents onwards through a period of quicker change than any other century has witnessed. It is no use to pick and choose between the pictures, or to recall the old jokes. The reader can see these for himself, and our business is simply to remind him that here is an inexhaustible fund of humor, which is also in its way an inimitable history of manners."
