and thought we should get much credit for sacrificing our own judgment and inclination to what we supposed to be the general wish. But straightway we received eight or nine letters of expostulation, besides personal rebukes, for making away with the old gentleman. However, the deed is done; and we could not resuscitate him without exposing our. selves to the cross fire of the other phalanx. We thank our correspondents for their favourable opinion of our uncle, whose principles survive in our pages, though he is gone.

We have to request the indulgence of some who expected private replies to letters addressed to us. The heavy pressure of literary employ. ment has compelled us to neglect, and almost wholly to drop, the most endeared private correspondents, the intercourse with whom formed one of the solaces of life; and some of whom will only learn by this public announcement the cause of a silence apparently most unkind. We pray them, and all our friends, to accept the explanation in the spirit of Christian sympathy, and to bear with us.

We have received-For the Irish Schools in St. Giles', from B. H. 21. 10s. F. M. 21. T. H. 11. Three Friends at Lyme Regis, 101. 88. Friends at Charmouth, 2l. 12s. Y. J. 10l. Countess Don of Rosse, 70%.
