certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: and when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the

vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard His parables, they perceived that He spake of them. But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitude, because they took Him for a prophet.

Then he says the usual Sentences, Confession, Litany, &c. (page 71), to the end of the Monday Evening Prayers; adding after the Lord's Prayer the following Collect:

ALMIGHTY and eternal God, who wouldst have our Saviour to take flesh and undergo the cross, that man might imitate the example of His humility; grant, we beseech Thee, that we may both be worthy of the instruction of His patience and the fellowship of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I looked also upon my right hand and saw there was no man that would know me.

I cried unto Thee, O Lord, and said: Thou art my hope, and my portion in the land of the living. Consider my complaint for I am brought very low.

O deliver me from my persecutors: for they are too strong for me.

Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks unto Thy name which thing if Thou wilt grant me, then shall the righteous resort unto my company.

ND it came to pass when Jesus had finished all His sayings, He said unto His disciples, Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of Man is betrayed to be crucified.

Then assembled together the chief priests, and scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of called the high priest, who was Caiaphas. And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill Him. But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.

Then he says the following Psalm:
PSALM 143.
EAR my prayer, O Lord, and

unto me for Thy truth and right-
eousness' sake.

And enter not into judgment with Thy servant : for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified.

For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground: he hath laid me in the darkness, as the men that have been long dead.

Therefore is my spirit vexed within me and my heart within me is desolate.

Yet do I remember the time past; I muse upon all Thy works : yea, I exercise myself in the works of Thy hands.

I stretch forth my hands unto Thee my soul gaspeth unto Thee as a thirsty land.

O let me hear Thy loving-kindness betimes in the morning, for in Thee is my trust: shew Thou me the way that I should walk in, for I lift up my soul unto Thee.

Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies for I flee unto Thee to hide me.

Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth Thee, for Thou art my God: let Thy loving Spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness.

Quicken me, O Lord, for Thy name's sake and for Thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble.

And of Thy goodness slay mine enemies and destroy all them that vex my soul; for I am Thy servant.

Then all say,
