FEBRUARY 9-10.

1 SAM. ii. 35.

And I will raise them up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house: and he shall walk before mine anointed for.

ever.

And I say

MATTHEW xvi. 18.

also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

REV. W. SWAN.

The former temple was a fane—
The workmanship of human hands,
Which time and violence might stain;
And now-not even a ruin stands
To lure the pilgrim here to stray,
And trace its glory pass'd away.
But this-the house God now erects,
Founded on Christ, the eternal rock;
His glory and his grace reflects-

Of falling worlds will stand the shock,
Immortal are its living stones,

For they are Christ's redeemed ones.

FEBRUARY 11-12.

PSALM viii. 2.

Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

MATTHEW xviii. 3.

And Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

ANON.

O draw me, Saviour, after thee;
So shall I run, and never tire ;
With gracious words still comfort me,
And be my Hope and whole Desire.
No lust can stir, our guilty fear,
Nor worldly wish, if thou art here.

May I but, as a little child,

Still follow thee, nor ever rest,
Till sweetly thou hast pour'd thy mild
And lowly mind into
my breast.

Nor ever may we parted be,
Till I become as one of thee.

FEBRUARY 13-14.

ZEC. ix. 9.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion: shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

MATTHEW Xxi. 6—7.

And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, and brought the ass and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

NEWTON.

Blest inhabitants of Zion,

Wash'd in the Redeemer's blood!
Jesus, whom their souls rely on,
Makes them kings and priests to God.

"Tis his love his people raises

Over self to reign as kings,
And as priests his solemn praises
Each for a thank-offering brings.

FEBRUARY 15-16.

ISAIAH xlix. 20.

And the redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.

MATTHEW Xxi. 10—11.

And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

HABERSHON.

Oh, who shall deliver the captive enchained In this body of death? Who the slave shall set free?

Thanks, thanks be to God who in mercy hath

deigned

A Redeemer to send us, O Jesus! in thee.

Then awake up, ye sleepers! arise from the dead!

On the watch-towers of faith let your beacon-fires flame,

For the Conqueror comes, our omnipotent Head;

Lo, the Lord is at hand; shout his wonder. ful name.

FEBRUARY 17-18.

DANIEL ii. 34-35.

Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then were the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors.

MATTHEW xxi. 44.

And whosoever shall fall on this stone, shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

RRV. R. M. BENSON.

The stone from the mountain of Israel sunder'd
Hath smitten the image of temporal might:
The powers of the heathen were palsied and wonder'd
To see their own idols struck dumb with affright.

The Kingdom of Christ above all is exalted,

The staff of His power is on Calvery's crest:

They see, who were blind: they are strengthen'd who halted.

The polluted are cleansed, and the weary have rest.

The deep graven stone, of the builders rejected,
Hath filled the whole earth with the tidings of grace;
The Gentiles from far, by adoption elected,

Have gained the full blessings of Abraham's race.
