OCTOBER 22-23.
ISAIAH lix. 21.

As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord: My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.

JOHN iii. 34.

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

LOGAN.

Behold the Ambassador divine,
Descending from above,

To publish to mankind the law
Of everlasting love!

On him in rich effusion poured,
The heavenly dew descends
And truth divine he shall reveal,
To earth's remotest ends.

OCTOBER 24-25.

HAB. ii. 4.

Behold the soul which is lifted up, is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

JOHN iii. 36.

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

CAROLINE FRY.

Faith, like a simple, unsuspecting child,
Serenely resting on its mother's arm
Reposing every care upon her God,
Sleeps on his bosom, and expects no harm.
Receives with joy the promises he makes,
Nor questions of his purpose or his power;
She does not doubting ask, " I can this be so ?"
The Lord has said it, and there needs no

more.

However deep be the mysterious word, However dark, she disbelieves it not; When Reason would examine Faith obeys, And, "It is written," answers every doubt.

OCTOBER 26-27.

ISAIAH xli. 17-18.

When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and dry land springs of water.

JOHN iv. 10.

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knews't the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink ; thou wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

ANON.

There is a pure and peaceful wave,
That rolls around the throne of love

Whose waters gladden as they lave,

The peaceful shores above.

While streams which on that tide depend, Steal from those heav'nly shores away, And on this desert world descend,

O'er weary lands to stray.

[blocks in formation]

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst : but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

NEWTON.

See the streams of living waters
Springing from eternal love,

Well supply thy sons and daughters,
And all fear of want remove.

Who can faint while such a river
Ever flows their thirst to assuage;
Grace, which like the Lord, the giver
Never fails from age to age.

OCTOBER 30-31.

PSALM xl. 7, 8.

Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

JOHN V. 30.

I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

When'er the angry passions rise,

[strife,

And tempt our thoughts or tongues to

To Jesus let us lift our eyes,

Bright pattern of the Christian life.

To do his heav'nly Father's will,

Was his employment and delight; Humility and holy zeal,

Shone through his life divinely bright.

Thy fair example may we trace,

To teach us what we ought to be! Make us by thy transforming grace, Dear Saviour daily more like thee.
