2. I see it yet; beneath yon blue clear heaven,
Still do the spires, so well beloved, appear.
From yonder craggy point the gale of even
Still wafts my native accents to my ear.

3. But lo! the sun beneath the waves retires;
Night speeds apace, her empire to restore;
Clouds from my sight obscure the village spires,
Now seen but faintly, and now seen no more.

4. Dreams of the land where all my wishes centre;
Thy scenes, which I am doom'd no more to know,
Full oft shall memory trace, my soul's tormentor,
And turn each pleasure past to present wo.

5. No more my arms a parent's fond embraces,
No more my heart domestic calm must know;

Far from these joys with sighs which memory traces,
To sultry skies and distant climes I go.

6. Ah! happy swain! he waits th' accustom'd hour,
When twilight's gloom obscures the closing sky,
Then gladly seeks his loved paternal bower,
And shares the feast his native fields supply.

7. Friendship and love, his cottage guest, receive him
With honest welcome, and with smiles sincere ;
No threat'ning woes of present joys bereave him;
No sigh his bosom owns, his cheek no tear.

8. Ah! happy swain! such bliss to me denying,
Fortune thy lot with envy bids me view;
Me who, from home, must as an exile flying
Bid all I value, all I love, Adieu!

We shall, in future, embrace a wider range of subjects, and treat them in a more practical manner; and we hope that the improvements to be made in the third volume, will secure it an increased patronage. Our subscribers will recollect, that the present number closes the second volume, and terminates their subscriptions; and, according to our rule, it will now be discontinued to all who do not order it, and pay for it again in advance.

The first number of the third volume will be sent to post-masters generally, who are respectfully requested to act as agents, on the terms proposed in the prospectus.

We have established the regulation, of requiring payment invariably in advance, and of discontinuing subscriptions at the close of every volume, until again ordered and paid for, as the only plan on which the work can be sustained at its present price.

By this regulation, the expense of collecting is saved, which usually amounts to about 33 per cent; and also the loss by delinquent subscribers is avoided. There is another evil incident to the plan of publishing a periodical on a credit, which often occasions a heavy loss to the publisher. A great many people, when they subscribe for a periodical, suppose, of course, that it will be discontinued at the close of their year, and at that time they cease to take it from the post-office; and before the publisher is informed of their refusal, several numbers are sent, to remain in the postoffice some weeks or months, and then returned with postage charged on them both ways. There are some inconveniences in our present plan; but we are convinced it is much better both for the publisher and his patrons, than the credit system; and shall, therefore, continue it.

To our numerous friends, who have hitherto aided and cheered us in our arduous labors, we return our sincere thanks; and earnestly bespeak a continuance of their favors, which we hope to merit.

PUBLISHER.

OF

THE FAMILY MAGAZINE,

ENLARGED AND IMPROVED:

VOLUME III. 1838.

THE liberal patronage which has thus far been bestowed upon the FAMILY MAGAZINE, has induced the Publisher to increase its size, by the addition of eight pages; and also, to make preparation for further increasing its interest and usefulness. To accomplish the latter object, a greater number of literary and scientific gentlemen have been engaged to contribute regularly to its pages; and a greater number of useful and interesting engravings of Western subjects and scenery will be given in the future progress of the work-The following subjects will still constitute an important part of the matter of the Family Magazine:

Natural History, Geography, Curiosities of Nature and Art ;-the different Professions and Occupations of life,-History of the Useful Arts, Inventions, and Discoveries: the Natural Sciences, including Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Botany, and Geology ;-plain Illustrations of Geometry, Trigonometry, Astronomy, and the Practical Rules of Arithmetic;-American Antiquities;-the Improvements of the age, Biography and Miscellaneous pieces in Prose and Poetry ;-General Literature and Education, as distinct from the forementioned branches, will not be neglected; a compendious Miscellany, comprising things useful and entertaining, curious, eccentric, wonderful, scientific, natural, and artificial, together with a general summary of leading passing events, will also be added. Our own country, filled with enchanting lakes and rivers and beautiful prairies, with mountain solitudes, wildernesses and forests of unexampled awfulness and grandeur, with the enduring monuments and mounds of an extinct primeval people, with battle-grounds, and the sepulchres of heroic virtue, shall furnish resources, of which we shall avail ourselves, to enrich our pages. All subjects which will admit of it, will be illustrated with Engravings. The first page of each number will be embellished with a large engraving, illustrative of American history or American landscape scenery.

The new publications of the day will be noticed according to their merits.

As a sort of pabulum for schools, and a treasury of knowledge for families, the leading object of the Family Magazine is utility. It is intended, that its morals shall be pure, its information authentic, and its arrangement in good taste. And while it is the sincere desire of the Publisher, that it may carry the cheerfulness of knowledge and the light of truth wherever it is received, he indulges the hope, that the kind feeling hitherto shown to it will be continued, and that his unremitted toil will be repaid by an increase of patronage.

As the work is stereotyped, the back numbers can at all times be furnished. The first and second volumes, handsomely bound, are for sale at the office of publication.

TERMS:

THE FAMILY Magazine is published monthly, each number contains 48 imperial octavo pages, at $2 a year, in advance. It is not sent to any person until payment is received.

The amount in all cases to be remitted to us free of expense. But when there is evidence that the money was carefully enclosed and mailed, and a memorandum taken of the Bank, letter, date, and number of the bill or bills remitted, so that the same can be identified in case of loss, we will assume the risk of the mail; but when this precaution is not taken, the remittance will not be at our risk.
