as thou hast wrought already more than once in Israel? And wilt thou leave but a tenth for thy sacrifice? (Isai. vi. 11, &c.) What do I say, But a tenth? Alas; it may not be a tenth of that!

Here let me pause: and here let our correspondence rest likewise, dear invisible brother, for the present; which 1 have been bold to address to you, undetermined and uncertain as to its renewal-in an hexaple series of letters on subjects of more ecclesiastical than civil, and of rather a more clerical than lay-importance. I fear whether I may not have played the dictator by chance rather too much for a curate sometimes in this essay: indeed it may be thought by many sufficiently assuming for one who makes no show in the world, as being invisible, to venture to address it any how. But we read in Scripture how "there was a little city and few men within it: and there came a great king against it, and besieged it; and built great bulwarks against it. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city." (Eccles. ix. 14, 15.) Only think, my dear brother; what a rich man it would make him, if divine Wisdom should condescend to deliver the smallest city in Christendom from the assaults of infidelity by you or me!
