Pope.-An Essay on Man. By ALEXANDER POPE. With Illustrations and Notes by S. R. Wells. 12mo. cloth, pp. 53. New York, 1867. 6s.

Mr. Wells considers that this Poem contains beauties which can only be fully appreciated by the Phrenologist; and it is with this idea that he has undertaken to edit and annotate it. Mr. Wells clearly gives a wider meaning to the word Phrenology than that usually assigned to it- otherwise the attempt to explain Pope's phrenological developments and characteristics from the portraits handed down to us would smack somewhat of the absurd-as it is when we gravely read "Phrenologically considered Pope had an intense mental temperament, a keenly susceptible and sensitive organization; the prominence of the eyebrows indicate power of perception, and a keen appreciation of material things. Imitation, ideality, and language were largely developed. Vitativeness

was influential," etc., etc., we cannot help thinking of post factum prophecies, and the wisdom that springeth from actual knowledge.
