Of raifing feed unto a brother. that she find no favour in his eyes, be-1 16 The fathers shall not be put to death Chap. xxvi. cause he hath found fome uncleanness in her then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and fend her out of his houfe. 2 And when the is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife. 3 And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and fendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife; 4 Her former husband, which fent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to fin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. 5 When a man hath taken a new wife, he thall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken. 6 No man shall take the nether or the upper milftone to pledge: for he taketh a man's life to pledge. 79 If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Ifrael, and maketh merchandise of him, or felleth him; then that thief shall die; and thou thalt put evil away from among you. 8 Take heed in the plague of leprofy, that thou obferve diligently, and do according to all that the priefts the Levites fhall teach you: as I commanded them, fo ye fhall obferve to do. 9 Remember what the LORD thy God did unto Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt. 10 When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge. 11 Thou shalt ftand abroad, and the man to whom thou doft lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee. 12 Aud if the man be poor, thou shalt not fleep with his pledge: 13 In any cafe thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the fun goeth down, that he may fleep in his own raiment, and blefs thee: and it shall be righteoufnefs unto thee before the LORD thy God. 14 Thou shalt not opprefs an bired fervant that is poor and needy, whether be be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: 15 At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the fun go down upon it; for he is poor, and fetteth his heart upon it: left he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be fin unto thee. for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man thall be put to death for his own fin. 17 Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take the the widow's raiment to pledge: 18 But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing. 19 When thou cuttest down thine harveft in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherlefs, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. 20 When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the ftranger, for the fatherlefs, and for the widow. 21 When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. 22 And thou shalt remember that thou waft a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing. IF there be a controverfy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked. 2 And it fhall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall caufe him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number. 3 Forty itripes he may give him, and not exceed: left, if he should exceed, and beat him above thefe with many ftripes, ther thy brother should feem vile unto thee. 4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. 5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead fhall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother thall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an hufband's brother unto her. 6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which the beareth shall fucceed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Ifrael. Of unjust weights and measures. 7 And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and fay, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Ifrael, he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother. 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and fay, like not to take her ; 9 Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the prefence of the elders, and loofe his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and fay, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house. to And his name shall be called in Ifrael, The house of him that hath his shoe loofed. II When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the fecrets: 12 Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her. 13 Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a fmall. 14 Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small. 15 But thou shalt have a perfect and juft weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 16 For all that do fuch things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God. 17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt; Of offering the firstfruits. shalt bring of thy land that the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choofe to place his name there. 3. And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the country which the Lord sware unto our fathers for to give us. 4 And the priest shall take the basket out of thine hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD thy God. 5 And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and fojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous: 6 And the Egyptians evil intreated us, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage: 7 And when we cried unto the LORD God of our fathers, the LORD heard our voice, and looked on our affliction, and our labour, and our oppreffion : 8 And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders: 9 And he hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, even a land that floweth with milk and honey. 10 And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O LORD, haft given me. II And Mofes charged the people the fame day, faying, 12 These shall stand upon mount Gerizim to bless the people, when ye are come over Jordan; Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Iffachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin: 18 And the LORD hath avouched thee 13 And these shall stand upon mount this day to be his peculiar people, as he Ebal to curse; Reuben, Gad, and Asher, hath promifed thee, and that thou shouldeft keep all his commandments; 19 And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayeft be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken. CHAP. XXVII. I The people are to write the law upon Aones, 5 and to build an altar of whole Stones. 14 The curses from mount Ebal. ND Mofes with the elders of Ifrael commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandments which I command you this day. A 2 And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt fet thee up great stones, and plaifter them with plaister: 3 And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art paffed over, that thou mayeft go in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, a land that floweth with milk and honey; as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promifed thee. 4 Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall fet up these ftones, which I command you this day, in mount Ebal, and thou shalt plaister them with plaifter. 5 And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them. 6 Thou shalt build the altar of the LORD thy God of whole ftones: and thou shalt offer burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD thy God: 7 And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.11 14 And the Levites shall speak, and fay unto all the men of Ifrael with a loud voice, 15 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people fhall answer and fay, Amen. 16 Curfed be he that fetteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. 17 Curfed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmark. And all the people thall say, Amen. 18 Cursed be he that maketh the blind to wander out of the way. And all the people shall say, Amen. 19 Curfed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherlefs, and widow. And all the people shall fay, Amen. 20 Cursed be he that lieth with his father's wife; because he uncovereth his father's skirt. And all the people shall fay, Amen. 21 Curfed be he that lieth with any manner of beast. And all the people thall fay, Amen. 22 Cursed be he that lieth with his fifter, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. 23 Cursed be he that lieth with his mother in law. And all the people shall say, Amen. 24 Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour secretly. And all the people shall fay, Amen. 25 Cursed be he that taketh reward to lay Blessings for obedience. people shall say, Amen. 26 Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen. CHAP. XXVIII. The bleffings for obedience. 15 The curses for disobedience. ND it shall come to pass, if thou A shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will fet thee on high above all nations of the earth: 3 22 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. 3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. 4 Bleffed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. 5 Bleffed shall be thy basket and thy store. Bleffed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goeft out. 7 The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. 8 The LORD shall command the bleffing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 9 The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath fworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways. 10 And all people of the earth shall fee that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee. And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee. 12 The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his feafon, and to blefs all the work of thine hand and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow. 13 And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the which I command thee this day, to obferve and to do them: 14 And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. 15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all thete curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: 16 Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. 17 Cursed shall be thy baiket and thystore. 18 Curfed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. 19 Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goeft out. 20 The LORD shall send upon thee curfing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou fettest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou haft forsaken me. 21 The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have confumed thee from off the land, whither thou goeit to possess it. 22 The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. 23 And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. 24 The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed. 25 The LORD shall cause thee to be fmitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee feven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 And thy carcase small be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away. 27 The LORD will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. 28 The LORD shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart: DEUTERONOMY. Plagues threatened for disobedience. 29 And thou shalt grope at noon day, upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and as the blind gropeth in darkness, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; bethou shalt not profper in thy ways: and cause thou hearkenedit not unto the voice thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man fhall fave thee. 30 Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man fhall lie with her thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof. 31 Thine ox shall be flain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine afs shall be violently taken away froin before thy face, and shall not be reftored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them. 32 Thy fons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand. 33 The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppreffed and crushed alway: 34 So that thou shalt be mad for the fight of thine eyes which thou shalt fee. 35 The LORD shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a fore botch that cannot be healed, from the fole of thy foot unto the top of thy head. 36 The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt fet over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and ftone. 37 And thou shalt become an aftonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee. 38 Thou shalt carry much feed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the locuft shall confume it. 39 Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes, for the worms shall eat them. 40 Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coafts, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall caft his fruit. of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee : 46 And they shall be upon thee for a fign and for a wonder, and upon thy feed for ever. 47 Because thou fervedst not the LORD thy God with joyfuiness, and with gladnefs of heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall fend against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have deftroyed thee. 49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as favift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; 50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the perfon of the old, nor thew favour to the young: 51 And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee. 52 And he shall befiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall befiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. 53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy fons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the fiege, and in the fstraitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee: 54 So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye fhall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bofom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall 41 Thou shalt beget fons and daugh-leave: ters, but thou shalt not enjoy thein; for they shall go into captivity. 42 All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust confume. 43 The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low. 44 He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come 55 So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he fhall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the fiege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. 56 The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to fet the fole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bofom, |
