DEAF AND DUMB BOY. Mr. Orper gives the following account of a deaf and dumb boy, whom he took from the beggar's asylum in Dublin, at which time the boy did not know how to pronounce a single word.

He had bim well taught by the master at Clare. mont, and he shortly began to speak. One evening Mrs. O. asked him, “are you happy?' To which he replied in a clear and distinct manner, “Chave God for my father, I have Jesus Christ for my Redeemer: I have heaven for my inheritance. I AX happy."

For water from a neighbouring town;
A stranger there, (unknown his naine)
Had faint and weary, sat him down.
He meekly said, "give me to drink,”
As water from the well she drew;
Ah! little did that woman think,
The tribute that to him was due !

He asked for water --but had she
known that the Lord of life was there ;
For his salvation, full and free,
Had been her own, her earnest prayer.
From his own lips, the truth she learned,
From his own love, the gift received,
And in tbat stranger's form discerned
That Lord in whom she now believed.
Children---that kind and gracious Lord,
Is just as full of love for you;
Impinre his Spirit ; search bis word,
And you shall know and praise him too.
He will the living stream impart,
He will his Holy Spirit give;

THE DELUGE. My dear children, I am going to te!! you a sail story, how the world was once drowned by a flood of waters, on account of the wickedness of the people who lived upon it.

You know that when God made Adam and Eve, he made them very good. But after they ate of the forbidden fruit, they became very sinful.You will remember also, that Cain killed his brother Abel, because he was a better man than himself. - As men multiplicit on the earth, wickedness increased very fast; so that “the earth was corrunt before God, and tlie earth was filled with violence.” H

When therefore “God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thought of his heart was only evil continually, it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth ; both man and beast, and the creeping thing and the fowls of the air ; for it repenteth me that I have made them." You see, my dear children, what an awful thing sin is. Almighty God is of purer eyes, than to behold iniquity. He has given us alarming proofs of his hatred of evil ; and our blessed Saviour himself has told us from his lips of love, that a day is coming when he will say to the wicked; “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”

Oh! may you now be afraid of sinning against such a just and holy God. Young children think little about telling lies; but hear this dreadful passage from the word of God: “ All liars shall have their part in the lake, which burneth with fire and brimstone." You would not like to be cast into a furnace of fire, no ! you shrink at the thought. O then, pray for grace, that you may believe in Jesus; love bim, and keep his commandments, before death strikes you with his dart, and sends your affrighted spirits into this shocking place.

“ Tis dangerous to provoke a God,
His power and vengeance none can tell;
One stroke of his Almighty rod,

Can send young sinners quick to hell!" God never leaves himself without witness. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. He was a just man, and perfect, that is, upright and sincere, in his generation ; and Noah walked with God.

This good man lived a life of faith, and love, and obedience. He feared God and hated the wickedness which he saw around him. He was a preacher of righteousness, warning an evil generation of the coming judgments of God. To this holy servant, Jehovah made known his will ; for we read that God said unto Noah, “The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make thee an ark of gopher wood. And behold I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life from under heaven, and every thing that is in the earth shall die. But with thee will 1 establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy son's wives with thee; and of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort, to keep them alive with thee.”

Thus “by faith, Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet,”-for the rain had not yet descended, “moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house ; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is of faith.”

Whilst good Noah was building the ark, O what taunts would he have to bear from a wicked world! Many would think he was growing mad in his old age. But he went on in his work, believing the word of truth, and telling all around him to flee from the wrath to come.

And is it not so in our day? Are not pious children laughed at by their wicked companions, both in schools, in workshops, and even in their own families? Yes, the heart of man is the same in all ages. They that will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution. But fear not, my dear children, you who love and fear God. You shall be safe and happy, when the wicked shall be destroyed with an everlasting destruction.

Many no doubt, were ready to help Noah to build the ark, as he would pay them their wages for their labour. But in their hearts they laughed at the silly old man, as they thought him to be. Thus our blessed Lord tells us: “As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of
