Crown 8vo, pp. xvi.-264, with 8 Plates, cloth, 10s. 6d., A GRAMMAR OF THE URDU OR HINDŪSTĀNI LANGUAGE.

"Lucidity of expression, descending at times almost to the colloquial style, an admirable clearness of arrangement, and careful study of all the recorded forms of the written language, are apparent on every page. No less able and admirably lucid is the treatment of the verb, in which all the numerous combinations which this supremely flexible language possesses, are drawn out in a logical and transparently clear sequence. The syntax is particularly good, bringing out in the clearest and most refreshingly intelligent way, in spite of occasional misapprehensions, the manysided expressiveness of a language which has no parallel for vivacity and graceful turns of phrase, except in the most polished Parisian French. We conclude, then, by congratulating Professor Dowson on having written by far the best Urdu Grammar that has yet appeared, and having thus rendered the acquisition of the most elegant and useful of all the Indian vernaculars both easy and pleasant to the student.'
