THE

FRIENDLY VISITOR,

EDITED BY THE REV. C. CARUS-WILSON.

A FEW WORDS ON THE NEW YEAR.

WELCOME, friends, to a new year! God's best blessing be upon it, with us all !

Some of us have come to see it who little expected it. Those who are aged we mean, and who have thought many times before now that each year would be their last. And yet God has spared them; and great reason have they to thank Him for His unexpected kindness. Well, such have much to say respecting His past dealings with them, and are therefore able to look forward with full confidence and hope that He who has led them hitherto will safely carry them to the end of their journey. The end of this year may see them in heaven; and they will not regret it, if they are found there. Meanwhile let them be patiently waiting until their time come. Many of Christ's servants can only serve Him by waiting ; while others may and ought to be actively employed.

And as to those of us who are in strong health, we too must remember that the end of this year may see us in another world. For even youth is no proof against death. Let us work, then, while it is day. When the evening of fatal sickness or of old age comes, it will be pleasant to look back upon something endeavoured for Christ. Oh, this should be the great object of our lives. How to please Him!
