For God is love. 1 John iv. 8.

MEDITATION.

When I look around me, and survey the fertile hills and fruitful valleys, I am constrained to exclaim, in the language of the Psalmist, Lord, what is man, that thou hast such respect unto him, or the son of man, that thou so regardest him?" Man, notwithstanding all his transgres

sions and impurities, has always been, and yet continues, a favourite of the Almighty. After God had drowned all the inhabitants of the earth for their wickedness (except Noah and his family), he promised, that while the earth remained, "seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, should not cease;" and this is verified every year. Yes, God not only sends genial showers and moist dews, in order that the corn which is sown by the husbandman may spring up, "first the blade, then the ear, and afterward the full corn in the ear;" but he also has so ordered, that it should be at last ripened and brought to maturity, by the burning heat of the sun, and by the less effective effulgence of the moon. Well might St. John say, 'God is love," having made provision both for our souls and bodies. Should not this love, then, meet a return? All the return that man can make to the Creator, is only offering up a thankful and a grateful heart. Gratitude and thanksgiving are pleasing to the Almighty: let me then thank the Lord for his goodness, and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men;" let me spend my days on earth in his service; not living in this world as if I were never to leave it, but praying to him daily for grace, so to use this world as not to abuse it, and so to
