MEDITATION.

That man is a short-lived mortal creature, is evident both from Scripture and daily observation.

He cometh up, and is cut down like a flower; he fleeth as it were a shadow, and continueth not. The days of man (saith the inspired volume) are but as grass; and this is a truth so frequently corroborated, that no one even dare or can dispute it. Man has the seeds of mortality sown within him at his very birth. He is liable at any moment to lose that breath which was at first given to him by the Almighty. All mankind, from the creation of the world down to the present generation, have tasted death (with the exception of Enoch and Elijah), and the time is fast approaching when I and all mankind who are now alive will have to pay the debt of nature; for the sentence is, (and it cannot be reversed,) Dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return. Awful thought! serious reflection! awful enough to strike the most hardened sinner with awe, serious enough to make the most thoughtless reflect. Knowing those things are so, do I (as an interested person) give them a serious consideration? Am I living as one who knows that in a short time he must die? and am I prepared for the change? Can I say with the Apostle, "I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day?" If this be my experience, happy am I. May I still go on and persevere, by the strength
