PREFACE.

THE following pages were begun at sea by a person from England, and continued through his journey up into the state of Ohio. They have indeed been corrected, and enlarged by some additional matter and travels since that period, but the additions were added probably on travel, and at a distance from home. As to the extent of the work, it had recently been intended by the writer to bear the following title, namely, "THE CHRISTIAN SPECTATOR: including a Journey from England to Ohio, Two Years in that State, Travels, &c." But for want of means to publish in a large form at present, he has come to the conclusion to publish only a part of it till a future period.

At a time when thousands were leaving their native countries in Europe to find a habitation, and the comforts of life in a foreign land-when the tide of emigration drew many after them, though not under the same obligations to remove as their acquaintances, who had gone before them, and when some more especially have given up a successful line of business to follow their friends or acquaintances to a distant country, it is not surprising if a few individuals, under such circumstances, should find themselves disappointed, and meet with difficulties abroad equal to those they had to
