ADVERTISEMENT.

Br the particular defire of a few Friends who are lovers of Vocal Mufic, I have engaged myself to pub

lif a variety of new tunes, all compofed by JOHN JACKSON, Mufic-mafter, of Bedale in Yorkshire.

Thefe tunes are peculiarly fitted to the feveral meafures contained in this Book; and are well adapted to fuit ferious perfons, who fing with grace in their hearts to the Lord. For whether the founds of them be very folemn or very cheerful, their numbers naturally flow in harmonious ftrains,, with much sweetnefs, eafe, and elegance-without being burthened with long tedious, tiresome repetitions: On this account they cannot fail of being useful to those who make a proper ufe of them.

The Notes may be bad either bound up along with this Book, or they may be had separate by themselves.

PREFACE.

ALL Scripture is given by infpiration of God,

and is profitable for doctrine, for correction, for inftruction in righteoufnefs; that the Man of God may be perfect,-throughly furnished unto all good works. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God fpake as they were moved by the Holy Ghoft". Hence the Holy Scriptures are able to make men wife unto falvation, and ought to be confidered as the best outward rule that we can have to guide us in all the affairs of life.

Yet it is certain that the letter of Scripture is not fufficient of itself to guide us to heaven, without the help of the Holy Spirit; for if any man have not the Spirit of Chrift, he is none of his; and it is the Spirit that helpeth our infirmties,-teacheth us to pray as we ought, and that maketh interceffion for us with groanings, which cannot be uttered. For this reafon, I have taken the Scriptures for my outward rule, and the Holy Spirit for my inward guide; and, in the following work, have closely adhered thereunto.

My ftudies have not been directed by confidering what were my former thoughts about religion, nor by a defire of imitating others in any particular opinion or mode of worship; neither by a defire of affecting a fingularity of my own*;
