4 Let light fpring up, and lovem take place,
Till ev'ry flavish fear is gone,
That I, a monument of grace!

I.

May tell the wonders thou haft done.

VIII.

Confeffion of Sin, and Faith laying hold of Salvation.

LORD", bow thy heavens to the found

Of a poor finner's pray'r;

Let grace much more than fin abound,
And keep me from despair.

2 For more mine iniquities are
Than hairs upon my head;

But while thou doft the guilty fpare,
Thy righteous curfea I dread.
3 My heart's deceitful', and impure';
Quite felfifh, and perverfe":
Its deadly evils thou muft cure,
Or I wax w worfe and worse.

4

I own thy wrath to be my due,
And helly my just reward";
Yet, thou canst form my
hearta anew,

Though e'er fo vile and hard.

5 "Tis plain, thy word is very pure,
That thou art just and true :
Thy threats and promises are fure,
As they are, thou wilt do.

e

6 Then Lord, fince mercy may be found,
Stretch out thine arm and fave!

For long in Satan's fetters bound
I've toil'd a captive flave.

7 At length throughs grace, Lord", I believe
Thou wilt falvation give,
That I free pardon fhall receive,
And in thy favour live.

Like wax prepar'd, O let me feel
Love's melting flame divine;
And ftamp on me thy Spirit's feal,
To afcertain me thine.

IX.

Godly Sorrow working Repentance to Salvation.

ORD, view the wretched1 state I'm in,
For reftlefs, like the troubled fea,

The raging" waves of guilt, for fin,
Roll round my head, and frighten me.

2 Weary thereof, I panting" lie
Inquiring for the good old way:
Thou Son of David, hear my cry,
And take this pond'rous load away.

3 Once more, O God', incline thine ear,
And for the fake of Chrift' impart
Thy loves to caft out flavish fear,
And cheer my mournful drooping heart.

4

For this defcend, celestial DOVE",
Cleanfe me like a refiner's fire;

Come now, all fin like drofs remove,
And me with thy pure mind inspire.*
5 Speak from above the mercy-feat",
That I may thy bright glory view!
Put worldly things beneath my feet,
And ev'ry fleshly luft fubdue.

Prayer with Confeffion.

TERNAL Gode of love,
My foul from fin convert;

And all this load of guilt remove,
For thou Almighty art!

2 Not one good thought have I

Thy favour to procure:

No word, or work, thy graces to buy,
For they are all impure"..

3 Thy holy law I've broke,

And felf-condemn'd I ftand, To bear the fin-avenging ftroke, Which justice doth demand.

4 But mercy is with thee, Who doth falvation' give;

7

And now, through Chrift, the gift" is free:
For finners to receive.

5 At laft (though late) I turn

To thee, the place of reft":
For all my fins, I grieve and mourn,
And pardon do request.

Gen. xxxii. 28.-Note, the word Jacob, fignifies a fupplanter, but the word Ifrael, a Prince of God, or prevailing with God."

Thus faith the Lord God, to every finner, as he did to the houfe of Ifrael, Ezek. xxxvi. 37. I will yet be inquired of. Call upon me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knoweft not. Jer. xxxiii. 3.

4 Still, Lord, thou know'ft when I would pray,
Sometimes my heart replies,
'Thou need not hafte, another day
'Will God as well fuffice.'

5 With all his art the tempter* pleads,
And fhews earth's pleafing charms;
Its deadly baits he daily spreads
As thick as Egypt's fwarms.

And I fhall rife again.

8 Like grave-clothes all my fins remove,
And witnefs them forgiv'n:

Work this great change, thou God of love!`
To make me fit for heav'n..

He prefents to him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, Matt. iv. 8, 9. Can any one then fuppofe that he will cease to tempt us, who, by actual fin, are become earthly, fenfual, and devilish? Jam. iii. 15. It is obvious, he will not; yet let us remember that Chrift, who was tempted in all points, like as we are, Heb. iv. 15. knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, 2 Pet, ii. 9.
