LONDON AN

JOHN FARQUHAR SHAW & CO.

48, PATERNOSTER ROW.

1874.

147. g. 57:

PREFACE.

THE Compiler expresses his thanks for permission to reprint Hymns, to Mrs. Alexander of Derry, Mrs. Lynch, the Very Rev. Dean Stanley, the Revs. R. H. Baynes, H. Bonar, D.D., E. Caswall, J. Ellerton, F. Gurney, W. W. How, W. Tidd Matson, J. H. Newman, D.D., G. H. Plumtree, G. R. Prynne, T. B. Pollock, M. A., A. T. Russell, S. T. Stone, Godfrey Thring, and T. Whitefield; to W. Chatterton Dix, Esq.; to E. Hayes, Esq., for the use of Dr. Neale's Hymns; to Messrs. H. S. King and Co. for permission to use six verses from Mr. Tennyson's introduction to "In Memoriam;" also to the Right Rev. Dr. Wordsworth, for permission to purchase the use of Hymns from "The Holy Year;" to Messrs. G. Bell and Sons for permission to purchase the use of Miss Procktor's Hymns; to Messrs. Novello and Co. for like permission to purchase the use of Hymns from "The Hymnal;" to Messrs. Longman for like permission with respect to Hymns from the

"Lyra Germanica;" to Messrs. J. Masters and Co. for like permission in respect to the Hymn, No. 203.

The aim of the Compiler has been quality rather than quantity. Some Hymns have been inserted at the particular request of Ministers who use the Book; whilst some others which were asked for (mainly on account of the tunes to which they had been set) have been omitted as unsuitable.

It has been found impossible to adopt the continuous numbering in consequence of the existence of a small supplement of Hymns on Adult Baptism, bound up with the Hymn Book for use in Baptist Churches.

Aug., 1874.

PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING.

Rev. xix. 1.

SING

10.10.7. J. ELLERTON.

ING Hallelujah forth in duteous
praise,

O citizens of heaven, and sweetly raise
An endless Hallelujah.

2 Ye next, who stand before the Eternal Light,

In hymning choirs re-echo to the height An endless Hallelujah.

3 The Holy City shall take up your strain, And with glad songs resounding wake again

An endless Hallelujah.

4 In blissful antiphons ye thus rejoice To render to the Lord with thankful voice An endless Hallelujah.

5 Ye who have gained at length your palm. in bliss,

Victorious ones, your chant shall still b this,

An endless Hallelujah.

6 There, in one grand acclaim, for ever ring The strains which tell the honour of you

King,

An endless Hallelujah.
