The scene is set in Britain. Powerful King Lear feels his old age and decides to hand over the power to his three daughters by dividing the realm among them. Before that he wishes to hear from them how much they love him, "That we our largest bounty may extend". The eldest and middle daughters told their father a lot of beautiful words but they lied. The youngest daughter refused to court and the King left her without a dowry. Later the actions develop both predictably and not. But the play absorbs so deeply that you can't wait finishing it.
