Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua and the people hasted and passed over. 11 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people. 12 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half ech. 6. 7, 9, tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them: 13 about forty thousand ready armed for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14 On that day the LORD d magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

I (Now Jericho was straitly 6 shut up because of the children

of Israel: none went out, and none came in.) 2 And the LORD said ch.2.2.24. unto Joshua, See, I have given into Deut 24 thine hand Jericho, and the king Cp. ch.8.1. thereof, and the mighty men of valour. 3 And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. 4 And seven priests shall bear seven 4 trumpets of 'rams' horns before the ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. 5 And it shall be, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD.

7 And they said unto the people,
Pass on, and compass the city, and
let the armed men pass on before ch. 4. 12,

8 And it was

so, that when Joshua had spoken
unto the people, the seven priests
bearing the seven trumpets of rams'
horns before the LORD passed on,
and blew with the trumpets: and
the ark of the covenant of the LORD
followed them. 9 And the armed
men went before the priests that
blew the trumpets, and the rear
ward went after the ark, the priests
blowing with the trumpets as they
went. 10 And Joshua commanded
the people, saying, Ye shall not
shout, nor let your voice be heard,
neither shall any word proceed out
of your mouth, until the day I bid
you shout; then shall ye shout.
11 So he caused the ark of the
LORD to compass the city, going
about it once: and they came into
the camp, and lodged in the camp.

9 And Joshua sent them forth: and they went to the ambushment, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people. 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. II And "all the people, even the men of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between him and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of 1the city. 132 So they set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait that were on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the vale. 14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he wist not that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 And all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and "were drawn away from the city. 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and set the city on fire. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that

way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the other came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or Deut. 7. 2. escape. 23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua. 24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. 25 And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not back his hand, wherewith he "stretched out u ver. 18. the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of AI. 27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he "com- v ver. 2. manded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an 7 heap forever, even a desolation, unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai he hanged a ch. 10. 26. on a tree until the eventide and Deut. 21. at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a z ch. 7. 26. great heap of stones, unto this day.
