ever, is a good Dutch word, which we meet with in the various Teutonic languages; thus English, bare (barefaced, barefoot); Anglo-Saxon, bar, boer ; Swedish, Danish, and German, bar; Dutch, baar; O. H. German, par; meaning uncovered, destitute, naked, raw, without anything. A. Wilmot, in his "History of the Cape Colony" (1869, p. 134), seems to have followed Kolb, because he says (1727) there were two classes of people in the service of the Company in India and at the Cape, named Orlam-men and Baaren-—the former of whom consisted of well-known persons who had served for several years, and the latter of new-comers and comparative strangers, &c. Then, in a foot-note: "From a corruption of two words in the Malay language-Orang lami, an old person or acquaintance; Orang baru, a new person.”
