In presenting to the youthful public this series of interesting Sketches, appropriately and profusely illustrated, the Publishers would by no means disparage those fictitious narratives which have been adopted immemorially as vehicles of instruction to the young. Still it will be admitted that these have their disadvantages. The more serious and practical purpose they contemplate is not unfrequently overlaid by the tale, and lost in its interesting incidents. The great object to be obtained is the presentation of truth, whether physical or moral, in an attractive form; and if this can be done successfully without the aid of fiction, and facts made pleasing by their own intrinsic interest, a desideratum of no small value has been secured. Sound and various information may thus be communicated in early life, and the best principles implanted and strengthened by an acquaintance with the less familiar works of the Universal Creator and Parent. |
