ONCE more, before we part,

Oh, bless the Saviour's name; Let every tongue and every heart Adore and praise the same.

2 Lord, in thy grace we came,

That blessing still impart;
We met in Jesus' sacred name,
In Jesus' name we part.

3 Still on thy holy word

Help us to feed, and grow, Still to go on to know the Lord, And practise what we know.

4 Now, Lord, before we part,

Help us to bless thy name:
Let every tongue and every heart
Adore and praise the same.

HART.

ANON.

GOD of the prophets' power!
God of the gospel's sound!
Move glorious on,-send out thy voice
To all the nations round.

2 With hearts and lips unfeigned,

We bless thee for thy word;
We praise thee for the joyful news,
Which our glad ears have heard.
3 Oh, may we treasure well

The counsels that we hear,
Till righteousness and holy joy
In all our hearts appear.

4 Water the sacred seed,
And give it large increase;

May neither fowls, nor rocks, nor thorns,
Prevent the fruits of peace.

5 And though we sow in tears,
Our souls at last shall come,
And gather in our sheaves with joy
At heaven's great harvest-home.

[blocks in formation]

OUR Heavenly Father, hear
The prayer we offer now:
Thy name be hallowed far and near,
To thee all nations bow.

2 Thy kingdom come; thy will
On earth be done in love,
As saints and seraphim fulfill
Thy perfect law above.

3 Our daily bread supply,

While by thy word we live;
The guilt of our iniquity
Forgive, as we forgive.

4 From dark temptation's power
Our feeble hearts defend;
Deliver in the evil hour,
And guide us to the end.

5 Thine, then, forever be

Glory and power divine;
The sceptre, throne, and majesty
Of heaven and earth are thine.

Ps. 4:8.

SOFTLY now the light of day
Fades upon my sight away;
Free from care, from labor free,
Lord, I would commune with thee.

2 Thou, whose all-pervading eye
Naught escapes without, within,
Pardon each infirmity,
Open fault, and secret sin.

3 Soon, for me, the light of day
Shall forever pass away;
Then, from sin and sorrow free,
Take me, Lord, to dwell with thee.

4 Thou who, sinless, yet hast known All of man's infirmity;

Then from thine eternal throne,
Jesus, look with pitying eye.

Ps. 121: 4.

THOU, from whom we never part,
Thou, whose love is everywhere,
Thou, who seest every heart,
Listen to our evening prayer.

2 Father, fill our hearts with love,
Love unfailing, full and free;
Love that no alarm can move,
Love that ever rests on thee.

SOFTLY fades the twilight ray
Of the holy Sabbath day;
Gently as life's setting sun,
When the Christian's course is run.

2 Night her solemn mantle spreads
O'er the earth as daylight fades;
All things tell of calm repose,
At the holy Sabbath's close.

3 Peace is on the world abroad;
'Tis the holy peace of God-
Symbol of the peace within
When the spirit rests from sin.

4 Still the Spirit lingers near,

Where the evening worshiper
Seeks communion with the skies,
Pressing onward to the prize.
5 Saviour! may our Sabbaths be

Days of joy and peace in thee,
Till in heaven our souls repose,
Where the Sabbath ne'er shall close.

Heb. 13:20.

NEWTON.

[blocks in formation]

FOR the mercies of the day,
For this rest upon our way,
Thanks to thee alone be given,
Lord of earth and King of heaven!

2 Cold our services have been,
Mingled every prayer with sin
But thou canst and wilt forgive;
By thy grace alone we live.
3 While this thorny path we tread,
May thy love our footsteps lead;
When our journey here is past,
May we rest with thee at last.

4 Let these earthly Sabbaths prove
Foretastes of our joys above;
While their steps thy children bend
To the rest which knows no end.

174

LORD, dismiss us with thy blessing;
Fill our hearts with joy and peace;
Let us each, thy love possessing,
Triumph in redeeming grace:
Oh, refresh us,

Traveling through this wilderness. 2 Thanks we give, and adoration,

For thy gospel's joyful sound;
May the fruits of thy salvation
In our hearts and lives abound;
May thy presence
With us evermore be found.

3 Then, whene'er the signal's given
Us from earth to call away,
Borne on angels' wings to heaven,
Glad the summons to obey,

173

May we ever

Reign with Christ in endless day!

[blocks in formation]

COME, thou soul-transforming Spirit,
Bless the sower and the seed;
Let each heart thy grace inherit;
Raise the weak, the hungry feed!
From the gospel

Now supply thy people's need.

2 Oh, may all enjoy the blessing

Which thy word 's designed to give; Let us all, thy love possessing, Joyfully the truth receive;

And forever

To thy praise and glory live.

2 Pet. 3:11.

[blocks in formation]

GENTLY, Lord, oh, gently lead us
Through this lonely vale of tears;
Thro' the changes thou 'st decreed us,
Till our last great change appears.
2 When temptation's darts assail us,
When in devious paths we stray,
Let thy goodness never fail us,
Lead us in thy perfect way.

3 In the hour of pain and anguish,
In the hour when death draws near,
Suffer not our hearts to languish,—
Suffer not our souls to fear.

4 And, when mortal life is ended,
Bid us on thy bosom rest,
Till, by angel-bands attended,
We awake among the blest.
