John 19: 2.

GERHARDT.

1096
O SACRED Head, now wounded,
With grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded

With thorns, thine only crown;
O sacred Head, what glory,
What bliss, till now was thine!
Yet, though despised and gory,
I joy to call thee mine.

2 What thou, my Lord, hast suffered
Was all for sinners' gain :
Mine, mine was the transgression,
But thine the deadly pain:
Lo, here I fall, my Saviour!
'Tis I deserve thy place;
Look on me with thy favor,
Vouchsafe to me thy grace.
3 The joy can ne'er be spoken,
Above all joys beside,
When in thy body broken
I thus with safety hide:
My Lord of life, desiring
Thy glory now to see,
Beside thy cross expiring,

I'd breathe my soul to thee.

4 What language shall I borrow,
To praise thee, heavenly Friend:
For this, thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?
Lord, make me thine forever,
Nor let me faithless prove:
Oh! let me never, never,
Abuse such dying love.

5 Forbid that I should leave thee;
O Jesus, leave not me!
By faith I would receive thee;
Thy blood can make me free!
When strength and comfort languish,
And I must hence depart,
Release me then from anguish,
By thine own wounded heart.

6 Be near when I am dying,
Oh! show thy cross to me!
And for my succor flying,
Come, Lord, to set me free!
These eyes, new faith receiving,
From Jesus shall not move;
For he who dies believing,

Dics safely through thy love.

What foes and snares surround me!
What doubts and fears within!
The grace that sought and found me,
Alone can keep me clean.

2 'Tis only in thee hiding,
I feel my life secure―

Only in thee abiding,

The conflict can endure:
Thine arm the victory gaineth
O'er every hateful foc;
Thy love my heart sustaineth
In all its care and woe.

3 Soon shall my eyes behold thee,
With rapture, face to face;
One half hath not been told me
Of all thy power and grace:
Thy beauty, Lord, and glory,
The wonders of thy love,
Shall be the endless story
Of all thy saints above.

I 100
COME, thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise;
Teach me some melodious sonnet,

Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount-I'm fixed upon it!-
Mount of thy redeeming love.

2 Here I'll raise mine Eben-ezer;
Hither by thy help I'm come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed his precious blood.
3 Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee;
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart; oh, take and seal it;
Seal it for thy courts above.

[blocks in formation]

Floods of deep distress and anguish,
To impede his labors, came;
Yet they all could not extinguish

Love's eternal, burning flame.

2 Now redemption is completed,
Full salvation is procured;
Death and Satan are defeated,
By the sufferings he endured.
Now the gracious Mediator

Risen to the courts of bliss,
Claims for me, a sinful creature,
Pardon, righteousness, and peace

3 Sure such infinite affection

Lays the highest claims to mine; All my powers, without exception, Should in fervent praises join. Jesus, fit me for thy service; Form me for thyself alone; I am thy most costly purchase,— Take possession of thine own.

DEAR Saviour! we are thine,

By everlasting bands;

DODDRIDGE.

Our hearts, our souls, we would resign
Entirely to thy hands.

2 To thee we still would cleave

With ever-growing zeal;

If millions tempt us Christ to leave,
Oh, let them ne'er prevail !

3 Thy Spirit shall unite

Our souls to thee, our Head;

Shall form in us thine image bright,
And teach thy paths to tread.

4 Death may our souls divide

From these abodes of clay; But love shall keep us near thy side, Through all the gloomy way.

5 Since Christ and we are one,

Why should we doubt or fear?
If he in heaven has fixed his throne,
He'll fix his members there.

[blocks in formation]

3 The purchase of thy blood-
By sin no longer led-
The path our dear Redeemer trod
May we rejoicing tread.

4 In self-forgetting love

Be our communion shown, Until we join the church above, And know as we are known.

[blocks in formation]

On Jewish altars slain,
Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away the stain.

2 But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away-
A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.

3 My faith would lay her hand
On that dear head of thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

4 My soul looks back to see

The burdens thou didst bear
When hanging on the curséd tree,
And hopes her guilt was there.

5 Believing, we rejoice

To see the curse remove;

We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
And sing his bleeding love.
