to search these blessed Scriptures, and take the evidence of things seen for the evidence of things unseen, as recorded in this blessed book. How earnestly we implored them to teach it to their children, to write it upon the tables of their hearts! But nay, Lord, they despised thy commandments and thy statutes, and thy book, and stoned and killed thy servants. Thus, my love, the Scriptures will be an evidence against us; and O how many will they evidence against ! for how few have read or searched them with a desire so to be taught, with a humble dependance upon God!

The sixth evidence will be the Holy Spirit. O, will he say, in thy sorrows how oft would I have visited thee! At thy prison door have 1 waited when thou wert blind, I stood by to give thee sight: when thou wert in trouble, I stood by to give thee peace: when thou didst fall, I stood by to lift thee: when thy heart was broken, I stood by to comfort thee: when thou wert ignorant, and wast void of wisdom, I stood by to open thy understanding: when thou wast full of unbelief, I stood by to give thee faith: when thou wast sorrowful because of sin, I stood by to give thee repentance: on thy death-bed, I stood by to deliver and redeem thee. Nay, I sent my ministers to tell thee to call me in, but thou refusedst. I taught thee thy dependance

upon me: I showed thee, by evidence of thine own wicked heart, that thou couldst do nothing without me, and that thou couldst do all things with me, and enter heaven through me. I offered to wash thee whiter than snow, to make thee a child of God, to lead thee in the paths of pleasantness and peace ; to show thee the evil of sin, and the delights of holiness: but thou believedst me not; thou refusedst to seek me, nay, even to ask for me: though I offered myself gratuitously, without money, without price. O, I offered to bless thee and thy seed for ever; to serve thee as a servant, to accompany thee as a pilgrim, to smooth thy pillow in sickness, to go through the shadow of death with thee, and finally to raise thee into heaven, and present thee at the indescribable glory and brightness at the throne of Christ, a spotless child of God, a brother to Jesus, and a heir of righteousness; but thou refusedst.

The seventh evidence will stand before us in the countenances of hatred, malice, revenge, murder, jealousy, in the famished and tortured forms of our own children. O! how will they writhe in agonizing accusations-0, wretched, cruel parent! why didst thou not warn us of the wrath to come? O, why didst thou, by the example of thy sins, lead us in the ways of hell and destruction? O, hadst thou given us but instruction, instead of those bitter

encouragements to sin and wickedness, we should not have endured this unquenchable thirst, wherewith we have not one assisting hand to assuage our torture! Thou who gavest us birth, why didst thou lead us to death?

It is painful, my sweet child, to carry this awful scene further; but it shows, to the extent we have already gone, how justly all who have not repented of their sins will be condemned before a holy God. The end of the wicked will be awful indeed; for, after death, there will be no repentance nor forgiveness. But I will tell you to-morrow, my dear child, of the second paradise, which will delight your dear little heart with joy and love, as our former relation must have done with horror and gloom.

SECOND ADAM IN PARADISE.

I have already, my sweet child, shown you what a perfect, beauteous spot the first paradise was. The climate was doubtless exquisite to the sense, and the revolutions of day and night were so many changes of peace and happiness, and all was still, and all was joy. But in the paradise to come, my love, it will be always day; there will be no night.

In the first paradise, the first Adam had only one friend; but the second Adam will have thousands, and tens of thousands; and he shall be our beloved brother: we shall all be united as it were in one, so shall differ even in this respect from the first Adam; for we shal lnot require another. Our renewal will also be widely different to the creation of the first Adam. He was created out of the earth, you will remember, my love; but we shall be renewed by the Spirit, and our earthly part will be destroyed. The first Adam was merely seen, my love, coming out of the ground; but we shall see the second Adam com
