INSTRUCTION OF MUSKETRY.

PART I.

1. THEY are to make themselves acquainted with the Duties of Musketry Regulations, and to give their personal superin- Commandtendence to the drill and practice of companies under ing Officers.

2. To assemble the officers at least once in each half the non-commissioned officers and men year, and occasionally by squads, after the conclusion of the annual course, to hear lectures on musketry subjects from the Officer Instructor.

3. To equalize the companies before the annual course of drill and practice commences, and to allow no transfers to be made, except such as are indispensable, until the period for commencing the practice in the following year.

4. To direct the captains of companies to take their men into the country, at least once a month after the termination of the annual course, and exercise them in judging distance. They are also to be trained in this essential particular on marching-out days.

5. To conduct all correspondence, and to be responsible for the accuracy of all returns.

6. To allow no officer to be dismissed drill until he has gone through a course of rifle instruction; finally.

7. They are to avail themselves of the assistance and information to be derived from Inspectors of Musketry, at their periodical visits: and to afford every information and explanation which may be required of them by the Inspector General of Musketry.

The captain or officer commanding the company is responsible for the accuracy of the "Drill and Practice Returns" and for the safe keeping of the practice registers.

When the said flag is lowered, to order the commence fire to be sounded, and the " danger" flag at the firing point to be dropped.

5. On ranges situated in pairs, to see that the parties fire by classes at the same distances, and not one class in front of another.

6. When the cease fire" sounds, to direct the firing at both ranges (occupied in pairs,) to be discontinued, until the danger flag, at the marker's butt, is lowered, and the " commence fire" is again sounded.

7. To see that all persons who desire to watch the practice, stand to the right and clear of the party;-and on no account to allow any noise or talking among the whose attention is to be fixed on the practice.
