this work from its commencement, and to those in particular who have assisted and encouraged the Editor to persevere in this enlarged edition, his thanks are most sincerely offered : he assures them that their support has induced him to sacrifice personal convenience to what they have been pleased to consider as greatly advantageous to the whole Army; and from that consideration the personal labor of collating the numerous and various statements this Edition contains, has been rendered a source of gratification. In placing on record, and at one view, the achievements of the most distinguished Officers of the Army, together with the progress of promotion of all the General and Field Officers, the Editor might, in point of accuracy, boldly challenge a comparison with any work of a similar description; although in the present undertaking he could not obtain assistance by a reference to other publications.

The Editor has finally to observe with the greatest satisfaction, and the circumstance reflects the highest credit on the Army, that out of so numerous a body of Officers as this undertaking embraces, scarcely an Officer has shown a disinclination that the public should be acquainted with what duty he has executed for the rank he holds, the honors and rewards he may have received. Whilst, on the contrary, Officers of long or active service have expressed the greatest desire that a statement of what they actually have performed, of the rewards they have received, and of the hardships they have' endured, in the course of their service, should fairly and without comment appear before the British nation, and be preserved as a public record.
