defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the 10 men of Israel 10were gone away: he arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him 11 only to spoil. And after him was Shammah the son of Agee la1 Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together 12into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Phi12 listines. But he stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD 13 wrought a great victory, And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines Iwere encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 14 And David was then in the hold, and the garrison of the Philistines 15) was then in Beth-lehem. And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate! 16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: 'but' he would not drink thereof, but poured 17 it out unto the LORD. And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: shall I drink the blood of the men that went 13in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did 18 the three mighty men. And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. And he

Was he not most honourable of the three? therefore he was made their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the first 20 three. 241 And again the anger of the LORD

was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, 2 Go, number Israel and Judah. °¡And1 the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may (3) know the sum of the people.

standing the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the 5 people of Israel. And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that 'is' in the middle of the valley of Gad, 6 and unto Jazer: then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, 7 and round' about to Zidon, and came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites and they went out to the 8 south of Judah, 'at' Beer-sheba.

:

So

when they had gone to and fro through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months 9 and twenty days. And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10)

And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done but now, O LORD, 'put' away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very fool11 ishly. °1And when David rose up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's 12 seer, saying, Go and speak unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of 13 them, that I may do it unto thee. So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before Ithy foes while they pursue thee? or Ishall there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise thee', and Iconsider what answer I shall return 14 to him that sent me. And David

said unto Gad, I am in a great strait : let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of 15 man. So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer16) sheba seventy thousand men. And

when the angel stretched out his hand Itoward' Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing-floor of 'Arau17 nah the Jebusite. And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done 'perversely but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

:

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshing19) floor of Araunah the Jebusite. And

David went up according to the saying of Gad, as the LORD commanded. 20 And Araunah looked forth', and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king 21 with his face to the ground. And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord

the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be 22 stayed from the people. And Áraunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, 'the' oxen for the burnt offering!, and the threshing instruments and the furniture of 23) the oxen for the wood: all this, O king, 'doth' Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee. (24 And the king said unto Araunah,

Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the 25 oxen for fifty shekels of silver. And

David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with (2 clothes, but he gat no heat. Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and cherish him ; and let her lie in thy bosom, that my 3 lord the king may get heat.
