mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. 3 And Abraham 'rose up from before his dead, and spake unto the 'children' 4 of Heth, saying, I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my 5 sight. And the children of Heth

answered Abraham, saying unto him, * 6 °Hear us, my lord: thou art la mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead. 7 °And Abraham rose up, and bowed

himself to the people of the land, even 8 to the children of Heth. And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, 9) that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in the midst of you for a possession of a 10 buryingplace. Now Ephron was sitting in the midst of the children of Heth and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, 11 °Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury 12) thy dead. And Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the (13 land. And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt, I pray thee, hear me: I will give the price of the field; take it of me, and I will 14 bury my dead there. And Ephron

answered Abraham, saying unto him, (15 °My lord, hearken unto me: la piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that betwixt me and 16 thee? bury therefore thy dead.

And

Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, cur17 rent money with the merchant. and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the border thereof 18 round about, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. 19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre (the same is Hebron), in the land of Canaan. 20 And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the children of Heth. 241 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had 2 blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said unto his servant, the elder of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy 3 hand under my thigh: and I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 4 but thou shalt go unto my country,

and to my kindred, and take a wife 5 for my son Isaac. And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from 6 whence thou camest? And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. 7 °The LORD, the God of heaven, that took me from my father's house, and from the land of my nativity', and that spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife for my son from thence. (8)°And if the woman be not willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath; only thou shalt 9 not bring my son thither again. And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning 'this matter. 10 And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed; having all goodly things of his master's in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, (11 unto the city of Nahor. And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the fountain, and drew: and I said unto her, 46 Let me drink, I pray thee. And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels 47 drink also. And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him and I put the ring upon her nose, and the bracelets upon her (48 hands. And I bowed my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter for his son. 49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the 50 right hand, or to the left. Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or 51 good. Behold, Rebekah is before

thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the LORD 52) hath spoken. And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he 'bowed' himself 'down' 53 to the earth unto the LORD. And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her 54 mother precious things. And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. And they said, We will call the damsel, and inquire at her mouth. And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? 59 And she said, I will go. And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, (60 and his men. And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of ten thousands', and let thy seed possess the gate of those which 61 hate them. And the servant said, It is my master: and she took her veil, and 66 covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had 67 done. And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. 251 And Abraham took another wife, 2 and her name was Keturah. 12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare 13 unto Abraham: and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, 14 and Mibsam, and Mishma, and Du15 mah, and Massa; Hadad', and Tema, 16 Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: these

are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their villages', and by their lencampments; twelve princes according to their nations. 17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his (18 people. And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: he abode in the presence of all his brethren.

And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham be20) gat Isaac: and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of 'Paddan1aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian, 21 to be his wife. And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife 22 conceived. Two nations are in thy womb,
And two 'peoples' shall be separated

And the one people shall be stronger
than the other people;

And the elder shall serve the

younger.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins 25 in her womb. And the first came

'forth red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name 26 Esau. And after that came forth his brother, and his hand 'had' hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. 27 And the boys grew and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a 7plain man, dwelling 28 in tents. Now Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison : 29 and Rebekah loved Jacob. And

Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came in from the field, and he was faint: 30 and Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I

pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name 31 called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell 32 me 10this day thy birthright. And

Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die and what profit shall the 33 birthright do to me? And Jacob

said, Swear to me 10this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his 34 birthright unto Jacob. And Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: 'so Esau despised his birthright.

beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the 2 Philistines unto Gerar. And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3 sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these lands, and I will Testablish the oath which I sware

And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: (7 and the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, My wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah: because 8 she was fair to look upon. And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. 9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife and how saidst thou, She is my sister?
