THE great antiquity of the Hindus is be

lieved fo firmly by themselves, and has been the subject of fo much conversation among Europeans, that a fhort view of their Chronological System, which has not yet been exhibited from certain authorities, may be acceptable to thofe, who feek truth without partiality to receive opinions, and without regarding any consequences, that may result from their inquiries ; the confequences, indeed, of truth cannot but be defirable, and no reasonable man will apprehend any danger to fociety from a general diffufion of its light; but we must not fuffer our
