THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE,

For

MR. URBAN,

FEBRUARY,

Feb. 14 E have lately heard a great deal of the French Institute. One of our countrymen, in the pride of his heart, from being elected a member, has called it the first Literary Society in the world; and, indeed, all Europe has been loud in its commendation.

What will then our countrymen fay, and what will the rest of Europe feel, on the event which has lately taken place in Paris, and which I haften to communicate to your Readers ?

The potent wand of Bonaparte has diffolved the famous but hortlived Institute. His Fiat has decompofed it; and, by his order, it is now fubdivided into three diftinct Academies.

The firft is the Academie des Belles Lettres.

The fecond is the Academie des Sciences.

The third is the Academie de la Langue Françoife.

What advantage is to refult to Learning or the Arts from this Imperial Maudate, we hall wait with patience to fee.

Yours, &c. FESTINA LENTE.

diftributed to all thofe who apply for admiflion, and which I am in clined to think you will not be forry to communicate to the publick by means of your valuable Repofitory. In addition to thefe ufeful regulations, I must observe that a larger and more commodious Readingroom has been opened; that an officer is in conftant attendance to aflift the readers in whatever their purfuits may require; and that in general I have found much more alacrity in producing the books and manufcripts that are called for. Directions respecting the Reading-room of the BRITISH MUSEUM.

"The Reading-room of the Mufeam is open from ten till four, every day, except on Saturdays and Sundays, and week at Chrißimas, Eafter, and

for one

Whitfintide; alfo on Thanksgiving and Fast Days.

Perfons defirous of admithion are to fend in their applications, in writing, to the Principal Librarian, who will lay the fame before the next general meeting or committee of the truftees. But as it might be dangerous, in fo populous a metropolis as London, to admit perfect ftrangers, it is expected that every perfon who applies, if not known to any truftee or officer, fhould produce a recommendation from fome perfons of known and approved character.

In all cafes which require fuch dif patch as that time cannot be allowed for inaking an application to the Trustees; the Principal Librarian, or, in his abfence, the Secretary, is empowered to grant a temporary leave, till the next general meeting or committee.

Permiffions will in general be granted for three mouths, and none for a longer term than fix months; and at the expiration of each term, fresh application is to be made for a renewal.

Although the Librarians be strictly enjoined to ufe all poffible difpatch in fupplying the readers with the printed books or manufcripts they may apply for, yet as in fo extenfive a Library it may not be poffible to find every article immediately;

immediately; it is recommended to the readers to allow a reafonable time for the fearch, efpecially as to the printed books. It is expected that the Library will foon be in fuch a ftate of arrange ment as to render this intimation fuperfluous.

No reader (except in particular cafes, at the diferetion of the Principal Librarian) will be entitled to more than two volumes at a time; but they may be exchanged as often as he may require. Readers will be allowed to take one or more extracts from any printed book or manufcript; but no whole, or greater part of a manufcript is to be tranfcribed, without a particular leave from the Trufees. The tranfcribers are not to lay the paper on which they write on any part of the book or manufcript they are ufing.

No perfou is, on any pretence what ever, to write on any part of a printed book or manufcript belonging to the Museum; but if any one fhould obferve a defect, or be able to point out an improvement in fuch book or manufcript, he is requested to fignify the fame to the officer in waiting, who will make proper use of the information. It may be fufficient merely to fuggeft that filence is abfolutely requifite in a place dedicated to the purposes of study."

I avail myself of this opportunity to fend you another printed paper that is generally diftributed, concerning the mode of applying for a fight of the Museum. Thofe who have experienced the great difficulty there formerly was in obtaining admiffion for this purpose, will no doubt be pleased to fee, that on the first application they may now obtain tickets for any vacant day and hour, that may best suit them.

Directions to fuch as apply for tickets to

fee the BRITISH MUSRUM. "The Museum is open for inspection from ten o'clock till four, every day, except on Saturdays, Sundays, and Thanksgiving and Fatt Days; allo for one week at Chriftmas, Eafter, and Whitfuntide; and during the months of August and September.

The hours of admittion are at ten, twelve, and two; and each company may remain in the Museum two hours; provided they come punctually at the tine appointed in their tickets.

Such as are defirous to obtain admiffion, are to apply at the office for fuing tickets (which will be kept open on the days and hours above-mentioned), and produce a lift containing the names of each perfon, not exceeding twelve in number, with their defcriptions and places of abode. The attendant at the faid office will acquaint them what vacancies there are, and immediately deliver to them tickets for fuch vacant days and hours as fhall beft fuit them.

The fmaller the number of perions in the lift, the fooner they are likely to obtain admission.

Such as have obtained tickets and cannot come, are earnefily defired to return them at the office as early as poffible, that others may be admitted in their stead.

the Mufeum be deceut and orderly in It is expected that perfous who visit their appearance and behaviour; the officers being inftructed to refufe ad-miflion to, or to caufe to withdraw, any one who fhall difregard this caution-Paft experience has fhewn the neceffity of this injunction.

In going through the apartments, no one is to take any thing from its place; but if he wants to examine any article more particularly, he is to apply for it to an officer, or to the attendant on the company. No children are to be admitted-No money is to be given to

the attendants or fervants."

I cannot but congratulate the publick, and the men of letters in particular, on the zeal the Trustees of the British Mufeum have shewn on this occafion, to render that important inftitution as ufeful as may be confiftent with its fafety and the. prefervation of its valuable contents. Yours, &c. PHILOMATH.

Mr. URBAN,
