Elievin G the book entitled Ships That Pass in the Night, though containing many good things, is calculated to do harm, offering, as it does, nothing better than a mere guess for a dying pillow, I have written the present volume with the hope, among other things, that the reader may not only be entertained by the story, but finish its pages with the conviction that immortality is something more than a guess, and that the human ship, instead of sailing in the night, has before it, in spite of occasional clouds and uncertainties, an open sea and the clear light of day.
