Page 34 - No doubt the law itself originally contributed to diffuse and deepen this sentiment. If at first it was the cause, it became at length only the expression of public opinion. The requirement of this law that " the barbarism " of ignorance should not be tolerated in any family, helped to make it disgraceful to keep even an apprentice from school. To bring up a child or ward in ignorance was shameful and barbarous in the eyes of our fathers. This is still the sentiment of the genuine Connecticut
Page 128 - Bible is generally read without objection 8* in our schools. Much as I value its influence and desire its continued use. I oppose coercion, and advocate full religious freedom and equality. Wherever there is opposition to this time-honored usage, I would permit the largest liberty of dissent, and cheerfully allow parents to decide whether children shall read or not read, and be present or absent when the Bible is read.

The successive terms of School in the same Section have not, usually, any personal or educational connection with each other.
Page 39 - Association, in his opening address at its last meeting, says that the cause of this rapid progress of Swiss manufacture is plainly " the complete and special education which she gives in primary schools and practical schools and trade schools and secondary schools and cantonal schools, all topped up by the great Polytechnic Institute at Zurich. The Swiss manufacturer lives simply ; he is master of his business ; and his workmen, with whom he is in perpetual contact, respect him for this.
Page 128 - ... be present or absent when the Bible is read. Roman Catholic children may read from the Douay version, and the Jews from the Old Testament; or, still better, the teacher may read a brief selection; or if it is preferred, let the Bible reading occur at the close of the session, after the objectors have retired. Compulsory reading will defeat its own aim, and induce resistance and reaction.
