ELIJAH AND THE WIDOW OF ZAREPHATH. “For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. “And she went, aud did according to the saying of Elijah : and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. “And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.” I KINGS xvii. 1416. Elijah was one of those prophets who were sent to bear witness against the sins of the people of Israel. He lived in the days of Ahab, a wicked king of Israel, and testified against his and his wife Jezebel's many sinful and idolatrous doings. He was a remarkable prophet on many accounts, but chiefly in being one of the two men who have passed away from the world without returning to dust. Elijah, like Enoch, was translated, that he should not see death. Elijah appeared with Moses on the Mount of transfiguration talking with Jesus. B |
