Hongkong, 1864. 2s. 6d.

The following paragraph from the preface to the English work, which is here reprinted, along with a Chinese translation of it, will sufficiently explain its nature and object :

"The object of the present work is to supply a series of elementary lessons suitable both for school and for home instruction. A more comprehensive and systematic arrangement of subjects has been attempted than any at present existing in the English language, and a method of graduating the lesson has been adopted, which accommodates the series to children of different degrees of advancement. who have been engaged in teaching Chinese youth, especially where the English language and the ordinaay branches of an English education have been included in the scheme of instruction, have continually felt the want of school books adapted for the peculiar sphere of their

All

labours. The translation of Mr. Baker's lessons was undertaken to
supply this want, the author having found them better suited for the
purpose than any other he had met with. The second and third gra
dations will (D.V.) be similarly published. Alterations and additions
have been made in some of the lessons which the circumstances of
Chinese lads seemed to require, but not to any great extent.”

tions in Chinese and English. 2 vols. 4to. 10s. 6d.

We reprint the preface as it stands at the beginning of the book; it would appear from it that the book is a Japanese reprint of a work printed by the well known English printer, Thom, at Canton, in 1843. PREFACE: "As this little book has been compiled chiefly with a view to facilitate intercourse at the Northern ports, we have thought it advisable to give the sounds of the English words in Chinese characters, as these would be pronounced in the Peking or Court dialect. Any native, therefore, who pronounces them with a provincial accent, must mis-pronounce the English words, and a Canton or a Fokien man will-multo magis-make nonsense of it altogether. The Chinese block-cutters having never before been employed to cut English letters, we are sorry to observe, on getting to the close of our labours, that many of the blocks are badly cut, as to be absolutely illegible; for this we crave pardon of the gentle reader; the want of having better means at command has compelled us once more to fall back upon the same materials first made use of in the earliest state of the art of printing."
