PREFACE.

THE compiler of the following pages, is unwilling this little volume should go forth, without a brief explanation of the reasons which induced its publication.

Many years since, feeling that "Clarke's Promises," did not fully meet the wants of a thirsting soul, he began to arrange, in a little book, Scriptures under appropriate heads, with a view of facilitating his study of the Bible; until, through his daily readings, these heads numbered several hundreds; and which, having fallen under the observation of others, a desire

was expressed that the "little book" should be published; and although, during the many years he was engaged in filling up the heads, the thought never occurred to him that the book would ever be presented to the public; yet, in deference to the opinions of others, and in the humble hope that it might be the means of leading souls to a more diligent and thorough study of the word of God, he consented to its publication.

With no pretension, therefore, but that of an honest desire to present the Scriptures in their deepest spirituality; without alluding to those non-essential points, on which good inen differ; but dwelling chiefly on subjects which relate to a holy life, and deep experience, the publication is made; and the hope indulged, that the pleasure and profit derived from the labour of compilation, may be shared by those who examine its pages.

The method of studying the Scriptures indi

cated in the following pages, is not designed to be a substitute, or in any way to interfere, with the regular and systematic reading of the Bible; but rather to assist and encourage such a course; as the fragments of time that may be devoted to the study of the Bible, and which are but too likely to be lost, are well, and more readily spent, in contemplating one subject at a time, as presented in parallel Scriptures, and in their more spiritual aspects; and the truths thus grasped, are more clearly understood, and deeply impressed on the memory, and are more easily and effectively wielded for purposes of aggression, or defence.

The Holy Spirit presents to the mind the same Scriptures, in various aspects, at different times; and in following such teaching, there will be found in some parts of the book, a similarity of arrangement of Scripture, under different heads, which may not, at first, always strike the mind as having the several specific
