Disciples of Christ-Character Of. If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. Im. xiv. 26, 27. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 33. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. Matt. x. 24. Disputations-Vide-Contentions-Cause Of. Discriminating Testimony For Jesus. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Matt. vii. 6. He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Prov. ix. 7, 8. Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. Prov. xxiii. 9. I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment-hall. Acts xxiii. 35.

Distrusting God's Power and Willingness to Save. Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them? Num. xi. 22. Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? Matt. xv. 33. Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. 2 K. vii. 2. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh for he hath been dead four days. Jo. xi. 39.

Divine Guidance-Is promised. Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have d minion over me. Ps. cxix. 133. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Jas. i. 5. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. Ps. xxxvii. 5. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Prov. iii. 6. O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself, it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. Jer. x. 23. The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to the men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. Eccles. ix. 11. The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord. Prov. xvi. 33. A man's heart deviseth his way but the Lord directeth his steps. Prov. xvi. 9. But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead. 2 Cor. i. 9. When he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak : and he will shew you things to come. Jo. xvi. 13. He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Ps. xlvii. 4. I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Ps. xxxii. 8.

Divine Nature-How We are made Partakers Of. Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Pet. i. 4. We all, with open face

beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Cor. iii. 18. Put ye on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Eph. iv. 24. For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Heb. xii. 10. We know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 1 Jo. iii. 2. Doing Good-The Way Of. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Eph. iii. 20. By the grace of God I am what I am and his grace which was bestowed upon me, was not in vain ; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1 Cor. xv. 10. Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself: but the Father, that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Jo. xiv. 10. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Phil. ii. 13. I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation; for I have written a letter unto you in a few words. Heb. xiii. 22. Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. Col. i. 29.

Doers of the Word. Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Jas. i. 22. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Matt. vii. 21. Yea, rather blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Lu. xi. 28. Not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. Ro. ii. 13. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. 2 Tim. iv. 2. We are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry; ye are God's building. 1 Cor. iii. 9. All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do: but do not ye after their works for they say, and do not. Matt. xxiii. 3.

Doubtful Matters Should Be Laid Before od, And Moses brought their cause before the Lord.

Nu. xxvii. 5. I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. Hab. ii. 1. I will hear what God the Lord will speak : for he will speak peace unto his people, and unto his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. Ps. lxxxv. 8. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Is. viii. 20.

Drawing Back-Consequences Of. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. Heb. x. 38. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. Heb. xii. 25. And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws. Ezek. xxxviii. 4. Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. Ps. xl. 4. A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person. Ps. ci. 4.

Dress-Character Of. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. 1 Tim. ii. 9. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel. 1 Pet. iii. 3. Be not conformed to this world. Ro. xii. 2. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. 1 Jo. ii. 15.
