OR, THE

MARROW AND FATNESS OF THE GOSPEL.

Abasement of the proud. The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down. Isa. ii. 11. And he shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands. Isa. XXV. 11. Thus saith the Lord, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem. Jer. xiii. 9. They also that uphold Egypt shall fall; and the pride of her power shall come down. Ezek. xxx. 6. And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know. Deu. viii. 3.

Abiding in Jesus. Is Commanded. Abide in me, and I in you. Jo. xv. 4. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Pro. iii. 5, 6. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. Ps. xxxvii. 5.

How We Can Abide. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love. Jo. xv. 10. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. Jo. xiv. 21. If a man love me, he will keep my words. Jo. xiv. 23. He that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him. 1 Jo. iii. 24.

Blessings Of. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not. 1 Jo. iii. 6. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the

same bringeth forth much fruit. Jo. xv. 5. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Jo. xv. 7. Whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected. 1 Jo. ii. 5. Whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments. 1 Jo. iii. 22.

Consequences of Not Abiding. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except ye abide in me. ** Without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered. Jo. xv. 4, 5, 6. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established. Is. vii. 9.

Access To God, Is through Christ. Through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Eph. ii. 18. By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Ro. v. 2. In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Eph. iii. 12. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Jo. xiv. 6. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. Jo. x. 9. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Heb. iv. 16. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the vail, that is to say, his flesh. Heb. x. 19, 20.

Accountability and Rewards. That servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required; and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. Lu. xii. 47, 48. When thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind; And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Lu. xiv. 13, 14. Beware of the

scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutions in the market-places, And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. Mar. xii. 38, 39, 40. If I do this thing willingly, I have a reward but if against my will, a dispensation of the Gospel is committed unto me. 1 Cor. ix. 17. If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the Lord; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering: And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass-offering, and it shall be forgiven him. And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity. Lev. v. 15, 16, 17. Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 1 Tim. i. 13. This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Jo. iii. 19, 20, 21.

Accumulation of Wealth. Vide-Wealth-God gives power to obtain.

Acquaintance with God, Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. Job. xxii. 21. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Col. i. 9. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your under

standing being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. Ephes. i. 17, 18. That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you. 1 Cor. i. 5, 6. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. Ephes. v. 17. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Ro. xii. 2.

Admonitions. Vide-Rebukes-How administered. Adoption, The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Ro. viii. 16, 17. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Gal. iv. 5, 6. Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the Beloved. Eph. i. 5, 6. Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises. Ro. ix. 4. As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. Jo. i. 12.

Affections-Where, and how to be placed. Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth. Col. iii. 2. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth. Col. iii. 5. Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God. 1 Chr. xxix. 3. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts. Gal. v. 24.
