OLIVER GOLDSMITH, born at Pallasmore, Co. Longford, Ireland. After a varied and unprofitable life in England and Ireland, tramped through Europe, 1754-6. Arriving penniless in London, he took to journalism. In spite of his success in literature he died in poverty on 4th April 1774.
