EXPLANATORY NOTICE.

These Reading Sheets and Reading Books have been con-
structed on a scientific basis.

In preparing the Reading Sheets and the Infant Readers, the
author has taken for his guidance the following principles :—
1. ONE STEP AT A TIME.-With the exception of about a

dozen very common words, of exceptional pronunciation, the First Series of the Reading Sheets and the First Infant Reader consist entirely of Exercises on the short sounds of the vowels taken in order, one sound at a time.

The Second Series of the Reading Sheets, and the Second Infant Reader, consist of Exercises on the commonest long sounds of the vowels; and of double consonants with the short sounds of the vowels. A few simple exceptional words are also introduced, but not more than two or three in a lesson.

The sounds of the double vowels and the more exceptional sounds are introduced in the Third Series of the Reading Sheets, and in the Third Infant Reader.

The Fourth Infant Reader is suitable as a Reading Book for the First Class in a good Infant School.

2. AMPLE EXERCISE AND THOROUGH GRADUATION.-In the majority of Readers hitherto published, one or at most two Readers-a Primer and an Infant Reader--are considered sufficient for all the classes in an Infant School. The author of the Modern Readers is of opinion that graduation and ample exercise are of as much importance in the Infant Department as in the Junior or Senior Schools, and hence has prepared FOUR Infant Readers.

3. SIMPLE, INTERESTING LESSONS.-The words, and the ideas involved in the sentences used, are entirely within the comprehension of children; and all unmeaning sentences, given as mere exercises on words, have been rejected.

In the Readers for the Junior and Senior Departments the same careful attention has been given to the GRADUATION-in words, subject-matter, and style-as in the Infant Readers, and especial care has been taken to make the lessons so simple, interesting, and attractive, as to awaken the child's interest, cultivate his intelligence, and induce a love for Reading.

In preparing the Modern Geographical Readers to meet the requirements of the New Education Code, 1880, the author has endeavoured to clothe with life and interest the dry facts as set out in the numerous little text-books in common use, and to present a series of Reading Lessons in a form at once simple in style, language, and idea, and sufficiently attractive to take their place as Reading Books side by side with ordinary School Readers. Children learn through the eye as well as through the ear, and clearer and more correct ideas of natural objects, such as rocky coasts, mountain chains, rivers, lakes, &c., can be given by good illustrations than by any verbal description, however lucid; hence the books have been well and abundantly illustrated.

The printing, paper, and binding of the Modern Geographical Readers will be of the same high quality as the Modern School Readers.
