Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours ; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shall be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. Then said he unto him, A certain man made a

great supper, and bade many: And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them : I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

Questions and Explanations.

Question.—What point is specially to be noticed in

the parable of the unforgiving servant ? Answer.-That his sin was especially heavy ; for his lord

had forgiven him an enormous debt, ten thousand talents, whereas he showed himself pitiless towards his fellowservant with regard to a debt that was quite insignificant in comparison ; merely a hundred pence; and, whereas there was no possibility of his ever paying his master, his fellowservant only entreated him to have patience,

and promised to pay all, if time were given him. Q.—Why was the prayer of the Pharisee entirely

unacceptable ? A.-It could not properly be called a prayer at all. The self

righteous man did not implore mercy or pardon, but insolently reminded his Maker of the tithes and fastings, on which he prided himself; while the publican was conscious of his sin.

Q.-What lesson do we learn from the parable of

the unjust steward ? A.—That money is frequently a snare; and that those who

possess it should so use it that it may be turned to good,

and promote their eternal welfare. 0.-In what way is the parable of the supper par

ticularly applicable to the Jews? A.—That they received the first invitations to the feast of the

Gospel, and, like the invited guests in the parable, they
disregarded and neglected the summons; whereupon the

Gentiles or strangers received it.
Q.—How are we to understand the invitation to the

maimed, the halt, and the blind ?
A.-Those poor creatures who were blind in their ignorance,

and maimed, and halt, or lame, by not having been trained in divine things, were yet considered fit objects for the bounty and loving-kindness of God in Christ,

His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own

A.-He was angry and envious because he had not received

so much as was entrusted to his fellow-servants ; and therefore would not employ the talent that had been committed to him, in his lord's service. He considered his master “an hard man,” for not putting him among the most favoured of his servants.

THE WARNING TO THE PHARISEES AGAINST HYPOCRISY.

HEN spake Jesus to the multitude,

and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat : All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do, but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters : for one is your Master, even Christ.

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased ; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men : for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
