This work by Dr. Friedrich Ueberweg, translated from the latest German edition, has been selected as eminently fitted for the commencement of the Philosophical and Theological Library which is to be published simultaneously in England and America. After a careful examination of numerous works on the subject, and after consulting some of the most competent judges, nothing has been found so thoroughly suited to become an introduction and guide to the study of philosophy, both ancient and modern. It is comprehensive without being cumbrous, and rich in details without being tedious. The systems of the various schools of philosophy, and the opinions of leading thinkers in all ages, are exhibited with fulness, accuracy, and clearness. It is not only enriched with authorities and carefully selected citations, but with biographical sketches of all distinguished philosophers and schoolmen. It throws a clear and continuous light on the whole wide field of Ancient and Modern Philosophy; and whilst the work contains neither the presentation nor defence of personal views, but an embodiment of the doctrines and opinions of other men, its value is greatly enhanced by investigations and criticisms of an independent order. From its luminous and dispassionate mode of treatment, as well as from its comprehensiveness and accuracy, it is specially adapted to meet the requirements of students, and to become a text-book in colleges and universities. Dr. Ueberweg was a man of eminent ability, and rare attainments. As Professor of Philosophy in the University of Königsberg, he occupied a first place among the most distinguished scholars of Germany; and although he died at the early age of forty-six, this and his other writings cannot fail to invest his name with a fame at once wide and abiding. This translation not only received the latest emendations of the lamented author, but has been examined and enriched with valuable additions, especially on the history of English and American Philosophy, by Dr. Porter, President of Yale College. The first volume, now issued, embraces the history of Ancient and Mediaval Philosophy; the second contains that of Modern Philosophy. To facilitate reference a full alphabetical index will be added.
