JOHN, CHAP. I.-VERSES 1-18. The Word.-Mission of Fohn the Baptist. (1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was in the presence of God, and the Word was God. (2) He was in the beginning in the presence of God. (3) Through him all things were made, and without him nothing was made which was made. (4) In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (5) And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not hinder it. (6) There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. (7) He came as a testimony, to bear witness concerning the Light, that all should believe through him. (8) This man was not that Light, but came that he should bear witness to the Light. (9) The Light was the true Light, which lighteneth every man who cometh into the world. (10) It was in the world, and the world existed through it, and the world knew it not. (11) It came to its own things, and its own people did not receive it. (12) And as many as received him, he gave them power to become the children of God, to those who believe in his name. (13) These do not become so from blood, nor from the will of the flesh, nor from the will of man, but from God. (14) And the Word became flesh, and took up its abode in us, and we admired his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of love and truth. (15) John bore witness about him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I said, He who cometh after me was before me, for he was before me. (16) And we all received of his fulness, and grace for grace. (17). For the Law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (18) No one hath ever seen God; the only-begotten Son, being in the bosom of the Father, hath revealed him. § 1.
