Firft, if there was any connection at all, in the mind of the Prophet, between the two verfes, juft now read to you and to fuppofe there was not, would be a fuppofition, which would not lefs reflect upon the Prophet, than on the commentator who made it ;—it is abundantly evident, what that connection was. It could be to all human appearance, nothing elfe, but this. Will you, therefore, when this miraculous perfon come, this EMANUEL,-this GOD with us, will you then con

tend with HIM, as you do now with MERE MEN; and difregard and difbelieve HIM, as you do now the Prophets fent to you from God.

Secondly. It is evident, as I have fhown, from the Gofpels, that this prediction of the miraculous birth of EMANUEL, or, GOD WITH US,. was literally, primarily, and completely fulfilled in JESUS. For, it is not only manifeft, upon an accurate inveftigation, that it was not LITERALLY fulfilled in ANY ONE ELSE; but likewife, it is evident, that it had not even a TYPICAL fulfilment in the time of Ahaz, though numbers have, notwithstanding, supposed

it. If any will ftill maintain it had, let them then point out the child. Not a child,-I do not afk that,— who was born of one, who was STILL a virgin, because, this is evidently an impoffibility. But ONE, -to whom only, the NAME of EMANUEL, Or, GOD WITH US,could, in ANY SENSE, be applied.

In anfwer to this demand, no one, I apprehend, will now be guilty of the grofs anachronifm, of fuppofing, that HEZEKIAH was THAT child-nor SHEARJASHUB, i. e. I

I conjecture, as we fo often have been already, to the next chapter, for an answer.-But what do we find there ?-The birth indeed of a child. to the Prophet, by one, whofe mother WAS a VIRGIN, at the time. of the delivery of the prophecy ;and the fign for which he was given, is exprefsly declared, viz. plunder of Damafcus, and the fpoil "of Samaria." Accordingly, his name is chofen, on purpose to fignify, this intention of his birth.It is Maher-fhalal-hash-baz, which very pertinently denotes,

NATURE, OFFICE, CHARACTER, or even

even, in NAME, does HE bear to EMANUEL, or GOD WITH US. He was neither miraculously, nor in any other manner, the avenger of the crimes of Ifrael, or of Syria, nor the protector, nor law-giver of Judea, But, if SUCH an one can be con fidered as the TYPE of the EMANUEL; there can not be a person, or an event, in the Old. Teftament, which ought not to be equally admitted, as a TYPE of fome person, or event, in the Gofpels. For, I dare challenge any one to produce, from the most mystical writer, a type, fo far remote from plaufibility, and fo totally deftitute of refemblance, as this.-But befides, as no
