THE plan of publication followed in this volume is that which was proposed in outline in Part I, published in 1891. I have given in the following Plates (1) about forty-five Tablets, on which the names of the scribes have either been omitted, or have been broken away; (2) the complete correspondence of certain scribes; and (3) the remaining Letters belonging to scribes, a part of whose correspondence had been published in previous volumes. Under this last head I have in one or two cases omitted some of the fragments, reserving them for a future Part. It will be possible to assign many of the Letters without names to their proper places from a study of their contents, and from the style of the handwriting. This was intentionally not attempted in the present volume, because it has been my aim from the beginning to reproduce the original texts as nearly as possible, without giving restorations—except in a few places where they seemed certain-or notes of any kind. As mentioned in a previous Preface such notes, textual, philological, and historical, will find a place in later volumes of commentaries on the texts. Nos. 440, 458, 498, 522, and 529 have been published by S. A. SMITH, and Nos. 437, 460, 462, 507, 527, 528 by WINCKLER. I am very much indebted to them for their |
