PREFACE.

THE plan of publication followed in this volume is that which was proposed in outline in Part I, published in 1891. I have given in the following Plates (1) about forty-five Tablets, on which the names of the scribes have either been omitted, or have been broken away; (2) the complete correspondence of certain scribes; and (3) the remaining Letters belonging to scribes, a part of whose correspondence had been published in previous volumes. Under this last head I have in one or two cases omitted some of the fragments, reserving them for a future Part.

Nos. 440, 458, 498, 522, and 529 have been published by S. A. SMITH, and Nos. 437, 460, 462, 507, 527, 528 by WINCKLER. I am very much indebted to them for their
