Drummond that it was his hand-writing if he would call or fend to him about it; and defired I would return to Mr Drummond, and tell him fo. Accordingly I returned to Mr Drummond; and from the implicit confidence I had in all Mrs Rudd told me, I inadvertently gave her words to him as my own, faying, that I had feen Mr Adair: but this I folemnly proteft was done from no motive of defrauding whatever; nor did I ever detain any of the monies arising from the discounts of thefe fecurities for my own ufe. Therefore, through my imprudence or folly in telling a falfity, F am unhappily brought to an ignominious and fhameful death.

ROBERT PERREAU."

"Daniel Perreau's Dying Declaration.

I do folemnly declare, in the prefence of Almighty God, before whom I am going to be judged for all my actions, that I am totally innocent of all the forgeries of bonds or other fecurities of Mr William Adair, given to my unhappy brother and myfelf by Mrs Margaret Caroline Rudd to be negotiated; but that my unhappy connection with her, and infatuation to her, made me believe every thing he told me was true: therefore, through her impofitions, deccived my brother in the supposed and pretended acquaintance with Mr Adair; always believing, however, from her stories, that I was very foon to be introduced and connected with him by means of her family-alliance, and thereby to derive confiderable advantages in life; by which I am unhappily brought to an ignominious end through her artifices.

DANIEL PERREAU."

On Sunday evening, the 21ft, the remains of the two Perreaus were carried from the houfe of Robert Perreau in Golden-fquare, and, after the ufual folemnities, depofited in the vault belong. ing to St Martin's church. The coffins were covered with black cloth, and black nails, with a black plate on each, on which were infcribed their names, day of their death, and age, which was 42, being twins, born within ten minutes of each other. The eldeft was Daniel. They were carried in feparate hearfes, attended by their friends in mourning-coaches, and by an innumerable croud of fpectators; who behaved with decency till they came to the entrance of the church; but there they became fo rude, that it was with

difficulty the bodies and mourners could get entrance; and it was not till after the whole funeral ceremony was over, that they were prevailed upon to dif perse.

"Since the execution, the people appear to be as much divided in their o pinions about the guilt or innocence of Robert Perreau, as about the American caufe. It must be confeffed, that appearances are greatly against him, and that it is next to impoffible, unlefs we fuppofe him to act under the immediate influence of fome fatal neceffaty, to give entire credit to his dying declaration. If we admit fuch a neceffity, then we muft deny free-will. The queftion is perplexing; but it is yet in the power of one perfon to folve the difficulty; and it is hoped, that before the leave the world, the will, for the fatisfaction of the public, and the falvation of her own foul, leave a faithful relation of all her tranfactions with Robert Perreau. With refpect to Daniel, as her connections with him were of another kind, the may be permitted, for the fake of her innocent children, to draw a veil over them.' Gent. Mag.

Daniel and Robert Perreau were the fons of Daniel Perreau, fecretary to the English General of the windward Caribbee islands in Q Anne's reign, who was born at Greenwich. Their grandfather was a native of Rochelle, where he had an eftate of great value, relinquished it upon the revocation of the edict of Nantz, and fled in difguife to England, with fome of his neareft relations, who were the ancestors of feveral of the most refpectable French Proteftants now in Eng

Jand and Ireland.
