church of England, bear no relation to the cause of the petitioning clergy; the reasons which influenced me in the forming of the refolution, now communicated to your lordship, are intirely my own.

After the most serious and difpaffionate inquiry, I am perfuaded, my lord, from the concurrent teftimony of reafon and revelation, that the fupreme caufe of all things, is, not merely in effence, but also in perfon,

By the force of the fame evidence I am convinced, that this almighty power is the only proper object of religion.

The liturgy of the church of England is obviously founded upon the idea, that in the divine nature is a trinity of perfons, to each of which every fpecies of religious adoration is addreffed, as well as fuch powers afcribed, as are the incommunicable attributes of God.

Under my perfuafion of the erroneoufnefs of this doctrine, I cannot any longer, with fatisfaction to myfelf, officiate in the established service: and, as I certainly can have no claim to the emoluments of my profeffion

In your table of contents you affert, that "Dr. Jebb exprefsly condemns all religious addreffes to Jefus Christ, and refers his readers to Mr. Lindsey's Apology, for the proof thereof." In page the second of your letter, after quoting the following words from my pamphlet: viz. "I am convinced that the addreffes, of chriftians, may, with the fame pro
